Mocked up or mucked up,you decide. It is big, that's for sure. I googled the real ones and it wasn't a bad try for TYCO. -Bob

Looks like they had a few Athearn shells lying around... the pedigree is obvious. Decent jobs on the nose and rear end though.
Guess the Super 630 wasn't big enough [:D] But what was their fascination for odd, rare real-world locomotive bombs?

Man I sure do like that! That thing with a PT could hardly pull its self I bet LOL. You`re right though it is kind of a muck up. The rivet counters would have a field day with this one! But hey , they`re toy trains and they`re supposed to be fun. Hats off to you on sharing this one with us Bob!

Imagine if they packaged that sucker into a train set? The oval of track it came with would have had to take up a whole room!

Was there heavy drinking in Tyco's design department in the late 70's? [:O)]

I saw a neat 630 painted for UP on the "Bay. I see this uses early 630 trucks.

Wow -- I guess I've mellowed -- it doesn't look nearly as bad as I thought when I made my first comment.
It looks like the fuel tank is one big piece of Zamac. Probably more Athearn parts. Must be heavy.

Probably why the "Ugly Duckling-to-be" doesn't have couplers...
...It would derail anything it was coupled with on one of those puny 18" curves!!! Then again, the ladders in the back are pretty far apart, perhaps when couplers would be attatched, there'd be 'nough swivel room?.....
...Anothe one of life's many wonders!!!!!!!!!!

It looks like it would've actually had body-mounted couplers. But the grilles on the sides look nothing like the prototype to me.

Close. The U50 had 4 B trucks, yes, but the U50C had two C-C trucks. Either way, the fangs don't fit.

originally posted by ILUVBUDWSR Based on the truck covers both having screws in them I say this has 2 powered trucks. Usually only the powered truck has the screw because it's there to hold the middle gear in place on the early 630 Alco PTs. I have occasionally dropped the middle screw, and lost it on a regular PT, and not having it in place it would cause the middle gear to not stay seated properly under power.
