Fellows, Thanks to Going in Circles and Ray for the info on the traction tires and the drive bands from Goody's hair products.
How are you guys dealing with the lack of handrails and stanchions on Alcos and GPs? I have formed the handrails, from I think .022 wire, but haven't solved the stanchion problem.
Thanks.

Welcome to my world! My lone 430 is crying for a set of handrails, but I'm not aware of any others (stanchions) that fit. Not even the Lionel "you bend 'em"s. I know the master model builders who roll their own would just cut a bunch of stanchions to length and then cement them to the handrails with ACC or something... but I'm not that adventurous yet.
Personally I'm planning to get another "junk" 430 that HAS handrails and swap them over... especially since I have seen unused Tyco handrail sets sell alone for more than a suitable donor loco.

Alco: Circlz "solution"--buying scrap Geeps and 430s with stanchion/railing components is the best course of action from my experience. He's right in concluding that in venues ranging from net auctions to shows, clunkers with vestigial sets of railings go for peanuts--plus the added advantage of other surplus. Good grief, I've never gone to a show or swap and failed to find battered junker 430s in '76 or warbonnet and there has to be a small mountain of trashed CBQ Geeps bearing ready-to-salvage stanchions... GiC and MA, You are probably correct about salvaging handrails from used Alcos and Jeeps. I went to my first show in some time at the Expo Mart in Pittsburgh in the spring. There were very few Tycos at all and none cheap enough to by just for parts. I'm hoping to have better luck at the next couple of shows this fall.

| I am seriously considering taking a mint set of rails for these engines to a machine/metal shop and getting a price for 1000 sets of each. I think I could unload 1000 of them without too much problem. What does everyone think fair market value would be?

I have been forming my own stantions. There are a few photos of some in this thread. http://www.2guyzandsumtrains.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=1381/postdays=0/postorder=asc/start=15.html

Hey NYC:
Handrail/Stanchion Prices
Plymouth Switcher: $4.00 GP-20: $5.00 Alco 430: $5.00 Alco 630: $5.50 EMD SD-24: $5.00
These are in line (approx.) with Mantua's pricing shortly before closing the doors permanently a few years ago. If you come close to these prices, you may have to eat the set-up fees charged by the shops (unless you know someone with a machine shop, and know their favorite beer or scotch, which will always render an immediate discount).
I'd support this project, and commit to purchasing 2 sets of each.

Ray,
Those handrails and grabs are gorgeous. I plan to study them more closely. May have questions later. Do you have any on your Tycos?

Ray - Da-yum! That's some awesome work! LIke I said above, "The master modelers roll their own"!
NYC - I'd be down for a set or two, but my fleet doesn;t require much more than that...

Thanks guys, I do have some Tyco locomotives with scratch-built handrails. A couple of GP20s ( I posted a photo of my CR GP20 here somewhere). An RI C430 and a PC C630 that I chopped the nose on. I try to hunt down original Tyco stantions and railings to put on the mint locos.
