Just won this off ebay in last few days. Nice loco. Similar to Tyco alco 430 but there are differences. Pemco 430 is slightly larger than the tyco version. Grill behind cab is larger and refined compared to Tyco. The rear fan area has slots while Tyco does not. The front nose area on the Pemco is wider and details differ than tyco version. The side fan slots on Pemco are smaler than Tyco's. Rear pilot is open on Pemco. The motor and chassis on Pemco--definitly not tyco-plastic frame with protruding tabs for shell to snap on. The motor is pancake style. Has directional lighting with resistors. Side trucks are more detailed than tyco and are black. Has traction tires similar to a Lima Alco 420. Nickel Silver power pick up wheels. Fule tank is molded into chassis. Front and rear trucks screw mount. See all photo's below

I bought one from ebay and when it arrived the steps were broken off on all corners. It is a nice running engine and pulls pretty good too. I like the open grills and the reversing lights. As usual my handrails are broken. I watched a Chessie version at a train show until it was marked down to $10 but it had broken handrails too.

You know I can't help but find it incredible that, for a prototype that only had like a dozen examples... there are two RTR models... and yet both have glaring stupid faults.

To wit: I dare anyone to find a 430 with an EMD fuel tank. And where are the dynamic brake grids on the roof?

I know, I sound like a rivet-counting jerk... but I swear I don't mean it that way. I am just 100% amused and fascinated that the effort would be put forth twice, netting the same old mistakes! This hobby is as fascinating "behind the scenes" as it is right in front of you...

Fidelity nitpicks aside, I like the cosmetic improvements on the Pemco version, but prefer the more rounded contour of Tyco's cab roof.

Hey GIC,

I think we have had this discussion before. As you mentioned, there have been several attempts at a C430 in HO scale. IHC, Model Power, Tyco, and Pemco have all given it a go. Oddly, they all forgot the same detail. The D.B. grid on the roof!

Since they are all missing the same detail, I believe they all share a common mold. Tyco may have made the initial mold. It was then given to Pemco who made a few minor alterations. Then the mold went to Mehano, who made a few more minor changes over the years.

Do they all come with the 2 single chime horns as well?

The interesting paint scheme in the PEMCO Century 430 set is the Southern Pacific example. It's dressed in SP's Black Widow scheme. Don't have one, but have seem them a time or two and they are nicely done.
