I'm also adding this Operational Narrartive from a fella on a Proto-freelancing list I subscribe to: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Winnfield to Zion Creek Turn Posted by: "George W Simmons" GEORGESIMMONS@prodigy.net realmopacman Mon Nov 19, 2007 8:08 pm (PST) On the Dry Prong, Bentley & Gulf Railroad's Winn District, on of the local is the "ZION CREEK TURN" or "WZT" as the Tplan calls it. It operates out of a same yard in the town of Winnfield, LA to Zion Creek which is basically a siding in the woods with a team track, a holding track and an industrial lead to the Iatt Papermill.
This is a six day a week job. Cars for the turn are setout overnight by through trains between Alexandria, LA and Memphis, TN, Oklahoma City, OK and Little Rock, AR. These same trains will pickup any cars going to there destinations.
The WZT's crew comes on duty around 7:01 am and receives it paperwork from the agent. A quick check of the motive power and caboose follows. Currently the power for this is leased GP18&GP7 from the MOP. Leaving the caboose on the short runaround track, the crew pulls south onto the main track and after lining the switch for the main moves northward up past the northend siding switch. The crew is able to do this since the main track through Winnfield is yard limits from OK Jct 1/2 mile north of the passing sidings to 200 feet south of the Dudgemona River Bridge at south end of town. Using the main north of town the crew will work the cars that have been left overnight. The yard has four tracks not including the passing siding and main track. These are tracks 1, 2, 3 and CS lead. Tracks 1, 2 and 3 are double ended while CS lead can only be worked from the north end. Cars in the yard can be going to any industry in one of three towns, Winnfield, Crews & Zion Creek. The first thing the crew will do is seperate the cars according to the destination town. Once this is done, they will work the industries in Winnfield. These include the following industries:
Dudgemona Sawmill Atlanta Pulpwood Winnfield Freight House Double D Plastics Winn Grocers Winn Team
and on the CS lead:
Castor Oil Company Castor Salt Mine.
Working the industries on the CS lead requires contacting the Dispatcher for permission to operate the gate governing the crossing of the main track to reach the salt mine.
After working the industries in Winnfield, the crew will drop outbound cars in the yard and make up the southbound train with cars for Crews, Zion Creek and transfer at Zion Creek Holding for industries in Iatt and Rigolette, the towns work by the locals out of Alexandria yard.
Once they have there train ready, pickup up the caboose from the short runaround track and completed the air test, they will contact the dispatcher for permission to depart southward.
Once authority to depart southward is given, the head brakeman will line the switches at the south end of the siding and the train will depart. As the caboose clears the southswitch, the rear brakeman will line the switch back to the main and climb aboard the caboose.
The track climbs out of Winnfield southbound crossing the CS lead and the Dudgemona River Bridge. After a 30 minute trip, the WZT will arrive in Crews. The industries in Crews are:
Grant Gravel Moses Lumber Crews Team Elliott Fertilizer
All except Elliott Fertilizer are located on the siding. Grant Gravel and Moses Lumber are located on the same spur, so the crew will need to get those cars arranged properly for spotting. Experienced crews know to do this prior to departing Winnfield. Crews Team and Elliott Fertilizer are facing point switches southbound, so either they will to run around cars to work these industries are wait until their return trip. Since most outbound cars from Crews will go back to Winnfield, they will leave them on siding when they depart to Zion Creek taking only the cars for that location.
Between Crews and Zion Creek, the line reaches its highest point in this area. In Zion Creek, the only industry is the team track so all cars for Zion Creek are setout here. It is double ended, so can be worked from either direction. At Zion Creek any cars for the Iatt papermill or the town of Rigolette are placed on the Holding Track or the lead to the papermill. Usually, the only cars that the WZT will have for the papermill are a loaded woodchip hopper from Dudgemona Sawmill, loaded pulpwood racks or empty boxcars for paper loading. Rarely loads of gravel are sent to Rigolette along with empty boxcars for loading at the P&G plant located there.
Northbound departing from Zion Creek, the train will usually have empty woodchip and pulpwood racks along with occasional empty boxcars for places such as the fertilizer plant or sawmill.
At Crews northbound, the train will do any final local work and pickup out cars. Cars going to distant locations such as Alexandria or beyond southbound or North of Winnfield are brought back to Winnfield.
Upon return to Winnfield, any final local work is completed. Then the crews makes up the blocks for pickup by the through trains that will arrive overnight. These blocks are as follows:
Train 84 - West Monroe, Pine Bluff, Memphis Train 34 - El Dorado & Little Rock Train 54 - Bossier City, De Queen, Atoka, Oklahoma City Train 85 - Lake Charles, Alexandria Train 55 - Alexandria, Jasper, Houston, Bryan
After completeing this the crew will return the motive power to the short runaround track along with the caboose. Paper work is turned into the Agent at Winnfield and Dispatcher is informed that they are clear of all main tracks.
