So I was rummaging through the piles of RR paperwork (magazines, timetables, rulebooks, stationary, calendars... never know what's there and every time I think "I've rummaged it all before" it seems like there's something I missed)...
...I found a magazine called "Modern Railroads", dated February 1965. Seems to be a neat industry-trade publication. As in, there are ads from the loco builders, car builders, parts suppliers, maintenance companies... just about any- and every-body who might have had a nickel at stake by supplying something to the railroads. It's actually an awesome reference guide, full of details and minutiae about how railroads actually spent their money.
Anyhow... some particular ads the got my attention:
- An Alco insert touting the superiority of the new Century 425 and the Alco 251 Prime Mover
- An ad from ACF for the original Center Flow Hopper series (!)
- Ad add from a chemical plant in Chicago that was right behind my house (Nalco) promoting a new weed-killer
- An insert ad touting the new ACI Kartrak system. You know those little multicolored barcodes that were used in the 1970's? Thems the ones. I actually have a 100% authentic ACI placard I removed from a B&O piggyback trailer, hanging on my wall. People often ask me "what the heck is that?!" and now I have a frameable advert that explains it all!
(continued after picture... oh yes....)

It's funny to see how that system was promoted, in light of how it ultimately failed. At least we owe supermarket barcodes to that system, even if nobody knows it.
But the COOLEST thing in the magazine, was a 13x20 spread ad from EMD touting the then-new GP35 locomotive. AND the "new" Norfolk and Western by way of reference. But look closely at the artwork! Does it remind you of anything?

Yeah... the artwork has a very distinct style... as also as seen here:

And while I can't seem to find it, I know I've seen other Tyco "box art" on a red background (not the steamer)... can anyone help?
Pretty neat to think the same artist painted both toy and real thing!
(if anyone is interested, I can upload and link a high-res scan of the ad. It was originally 12.5"x20")

Awesome Stuff! Wished I had junk shops like that around me!
I have that same EMD GP35 print, but the locos are painted for Wabash.
