Don't think there was a DD40 te DDA40X was the first. They were kinda test beds for new technology like digital cab controls.

OK, the Athearn DD40 is a DD35! ALL DDA40's had the full width cab (Short hood)

vv I ADDED A PHOTO vv

Hello, These two pic's may help you.

If not, then the general concensous(sp?) is that the Athearn DD40 was as prototypical as the fact that the Pennsy, B & O, C B & Q, (which other railroad choice?) did actually have them.
Athearn's version of this locomotive had/has a flat, flush rear end. Bachman's DDA40X had/has the correct tapered rear end.
Athearn's DD40 rear end also matched their SDP-40's rear end, I believe, which also sported steam generator vents, exhaust, etc.
Q. Where can one get the prototypical picture of a DD40? A. Only with an Athearn model.
Bells and Whistles!
John (a.k.a. Zebrails.)
I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out. "I love your catenary!" Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

Those are sanders...boxes filled with sand to be released for traction as needed, much like the sand dome on a steamer.

A DD35 by Athearn... Either it's no chance or very limited #'s.
Well, there was only one UP M10001 and it's being produced in quantities.
Granted, no actual DD40 ever existed. And as I was saying earlier, neither was there a DD40 for the B & O, Pennsy, CB&Q, etc... including UP.
Chop shop for a DD35? yikes... good luck. Yeah, for once I'm being a pessimist. er, or is that a pest?
anyway, give it a go.
Athearn GP-35 Demo? Wow... a step up since their SD-45 Demo.
What I wish was/is this: A Demonstration Paint Job on every model made... Perhaps a list of those roads who bought them and final disposition. What I do know of demo's bought/painted up by 'roads... GP-7 #100 To Chicago & NorthWestern ALCO FA's 1602's to GN RWY EMD's SD-45 (4351) to Great Northern...
Well, does anyone know where I may find such a list already published?
John

I do not know of a single source of all demo units. But I did look some up:
EMD GP18 no demo unit made GP20 all 4 demo units taken by Southern Pacific SD24 all 4 demo units taken by Union Pacific
Alco C415 single demo unit taken by Hamersley Iron of Australia C420, C424 and C425 no demo units made C430 all 3 demo units taken by Seaboard Coast Line
Fairbanks-Morse Train Master TM-1 and TM-2 taken by Wabash, TM-3 and TM-4 taken by Southern Pacific H16-66 no demo units made C-Liner 2 5-axle demo units taken by New Haven H20-44 2 demo units taken by UP Eire-Built single A-B-A set taken by UP H15-44 2 demo units taken by Monon, 1 demo unit taken by Central of New Jersey, 1 demo unit taken by Long Island RR H16-44 no demo unit made
I was some what suprised at how some models did not have demo units made. I thought the Alcos would have gotten more demo units made. I will try to dig up more if you want it.

Well, I have done some more digging. The results are not too impressive though.
GE appears to have not used many demo units at all: UD18 10 demo units all sold to NdeM. U25B 4 demos went to UP 4 demos went to Frisco Super 7 series 6 demos built with no info on who got them.
The U25B was the only uboat demo units made. Kinda makes sence as all the following models were realy just product improvements to the basic U25 model. Likewise, The -7 series were modenized versions of previous uboat models.
There were "demo" units made for the -8 and -9 series locos. But they were not sold to any roads. In fact, the demo units were simply rebuilt and reused as demos f or the next model. They were really just prototype/testbeds for the next model to be produced.
EMD seems to have followed GE's lead with regard to demo units. EMD made some demo units for 1st generation locos as mentioned before Here are a few more I found: BL-1 single demo unit went to C&EI BL20-2 3 demo units went to EMD lease fleet GP59 3 demos went to NS GP60 3 demos made but no info on who has them now
For the most part though, 2nd and 3rd generation loco demo units were kept by the builder and used as prototype/testbeds only.

| http://www.johnweeks.com/centennial/index.html Nice webpage here on these units (hope the link came out live here)....we've got one of these beasts at the Age of Steam Museum in Dallas, Tx. Also, about the GP-35 demos, I know that Frisco had a bunch of GP-35's, and the demo scheme is just like the Frisco's, minus the lettering......can't confirm at the moment if that's where they went.
