G'day, I'm hoping somebody can advise me as to how difficult it is to set some of my older TYCO, Life-Like, Mehano loco's up for DCC ....

Also, does it work effectively?

Thanks in advance

The key is motor isolation...can it be isolated from the frame so that the only power it receives is from the DCC chip? I recently did an original issue Bachmann Class J with the split frame mount and found it was not that hard to do. An old school Rivarossi Big Boy was practically a drop in fit but an equally old school Cab forward took a bit of ingenuity. My Bowser K4 would take a good bit of work, enough that I'd probably replace the whole drive with one of those "Helix Humper" retrofit kits.

Watch the amp draw, some of those old open frame motors will send your chip whinnying off to momma in a puff of blue smoke before you say, "Ooops."
