Here's an Athearn kit car that showed up at the hobby shop last week.

My COTW is this flat car and load:

At Christmas, I set up a 12-inch diameter circle of track under a miniature Christmas tree and run a train of small cars under it. This car is really just an 1/8" board with trucks and couplers, dolled up with file folder cardboard to look like a flat car with a plank deck and stake pockets. The boiler, crated in balsa strip wood, came from among a bunch of parts at a swap meet. The gear is from a worn-out oscillating fan.

It was fun to put together. It doesn't work all that well on my layout, but it's okay under the tree.
