I keep re-organizing my experimental Styrofoam and Cardboard layout. I am modeling a mountainous area with a 2% grade and 15" radius using flex and set track where the route loops over itself. Extending my tunnel would make it too long to access derailments; a trestle can facilitate reaching problems on the lower level track.
My resources:
First I make a template using card stock (cereal box) slipped under the planned track; I make it wider than I need:
Next scribe 4 copies onto heavier cardboard (wine box):
Stack and glue 4 pieces; when set then file edges smooth ( I used a bench grinder ):
Card stock "plate girders" add considerable stiffness (though not really needed for this length):
Cut to length, glue, and secure with pins:
Suitable for heavy trains (the glue will dry clear in a day; then the pins are removed): Edited by - offtrackthoroughbred on June 30 2024 7:53:15 PM

I like the creative approach to bridge building. But I noticed a little dip in the track as the cars roll over the bridge. DOes that give you any trouble?

Yes, that was a problem. This is an experimental layout in progress. The power feed wire gauge is too large and cardboard "tunnel" too high. After grinding the tunnel bottom, providing a notch for my wires, and adjusting bridge gradient, the dip has mostly gone away.
