Okay... For the millionth time... How can I get a meaningful amount of money for an old collection?
I had a friend give me a bunch of old Tyco that I do not want. He was hoping it could be sold. I explained that there are only select modelers who want Tyco. Other than a weird situation, I see it at trainshows all of the time for a dollar or two per car.
Is there anything I can do to increase the per car value, such as body mounting Kadee couplers, adding weight, or changing out the trucks to Accurail trucks and metal wheels? What about repainting a bunch of old triple dome tank cars into a unit train sort of thing?
It seems to me that there are many Tyco models out there that would make nice models if they rolled better and coupled better. Obviously, I am not a Tyco collector and have no problem kitbashing them or doing things to improve their operational characteristics.
Thanks for your opinions. All are welcome.

I'm no expert on the resale value, but it seems almost certain to me that you couldn't increase the resale value of the cars more than it cost you to buy the new couplers, wheels, trucks, etc.

Okay. Thank you. That is what I had thought. I do rebuild some Tyco cars but they get used on my layout. For all the rest of them, I will probably just get whatever I can for them.

I've sold Tyo by the pound to thin my herd. I've sold in lots up to fifty cars, as many as I could pack in the largest box USPS sold. Often, the postage was more than the bid, but I could not bring myself to bin them.

Yeah, I figured that would ikely be the case. I mean you just have to love the car. I do have the Planters billboard hopper. I model fairly modern, so billboards really were not a thing. I do think the colors are nice and the factory paint is done quite well. I can't remember if it has appropriate reporting marks but adding those wouldn't be hard. I wasn't planning on modeling a peanut farm but, it would be unique. I guess it could be an interchange car going somewhere?
Most of them, especially the pluggers and similar will likely go in one giant box to someone who just loves them.

Depending on what is being bid, you could get $10 for the Planters, and $15 to ship it. Doesn't hurt to keep a unique piece around, and the Planters is one of the nicer specimens.
I always use the auction platform, as sometimes surprising results happen. I had boxes of broken model rail junk, and those piles went for $50 at auction, each. I'd thought I'd be lucky with $5 a crate.

I had one interesting question about the Planters car. The SAL reporting marks must be for Seaboard Air Line which might place the peanut car in the right area of the country, but the reporting marks are in a funny spot. This doesn't seem too surprising because Tyco just put this data wherever they wanted on many cars. If I kept the car, I would place the reporting marks where they would normally be found, but what should it look like and where exactly should I put them? Can I leave them where they are?

You are a perfectionist. But how would you go about removing the silk screened reporting marks without causing some damage?

Borrowed this link from WKS, who posted it recently. May get the price for the Disney collector.
