Prior to 1959, Mantua-Tyco had produced aluminum passenger cars but was looking to produce more modern plastic cars. Gilbert was already making the Northern Pacific and Southern Pacific sets, so Tyco teamed up with Gilbert to produce their first generation of plastic passenger cars. These cars were 1 inch longer than the typical Tyco passenger cars and had one extra wide window per car. The only known road names for these Gilbert/Tyco passenger cars were B&O and Canadian Pacific.
Here is a trio of Canadian Pacific Gilbert/Tyco passenger cars.
