Bill Kachel's Pennsylvania Railroad
Cosmopolitan Division HO scale private layout

PRR 1965 New York to Pittsburgh has diesel and electric as well as catenary on over half his layout.

Has operating coal loader and rotary coal dumpers steel mill ocean-going vessels with a harbor.

And let us not forget Horseshoe Curve.

His layout built to recreate the mighty PRR in its glory days.

Also includes the HellGate Bridge and the Zoo Interlocking in Philadelphia.

Around the wall with access areas Bill is noted in the area for having developed a reliable method for constructing catenary.

This layout is truly an amazing feat of model railroading engineering.

It is open to visitors during the November Model Railroad Open House schedule for PA, DE, MD and NJ.

Hard to wrap my brain around so much. The catenary is something else. I cannot imagine
the ingenuity and work that went into building such a monumental layout. Question: did
the GG1's ever get run in tandem like that? All the old railfan film I've ever seen is them
running solo.

I remember some photos showing 2 units. But I believe they were pulling freight cars.

Rare to find those pictures Jeff.

Yes his layout is awesome. The overhead wire is not live. Just for realism.

PC, ConRail and Amtrak double-headed GG-1s, but Pennsy did not. I have a photo of double-headed PRR Gs but they were pulling an unusually long special consist for the Boy Scouts. I will post a photo if I can find it. I suspect that age and wear and tear had a lot to with that decision to pair them up.
