This is a Bachmann F9 with the newer drive. It's amazing the improvement Bachmann made in their product once they got rid of the pancake motors. For comparison, this version is comparable to an Athearn F7 with "super gearing" and yes it is THAT heavy. Just the sort of locomotive that will handle my steep grades with ease. Gone are the troublesome traction tires in favour of all wheel drive. These units are out there hiding among the many pancake motored F9s, if you know what to look for. I picked this one up for $25.
The Chessie paint is an interesting what if. Though no F units never wore CHessie paint, This one could have actiually existed. F9s were pretty rare in real life, but they were on alot more roads than many people realize. Many were EMD factory rebuilds of older wrecked units, and C&O rostered at least one of these in an otherwise large fleet of F7s. I'm not sure of its number but it would have been in the 7000s. The actual 7071 was among many transferred to the B&O in the 1960s. B&O ran their F units up until 1975 while CHessie painted locomotives first appeared in 1972. What if?.........
This one will get a decoder, and be put through the next round of locomotive trials on the CUmberland Terminal.

An Athearn Blue Box GP35 with the metal sideframes that I picked up last weekend.

| I had one of those many years ago. There was also one produced for Cox that was numbered C&O 3531. Interestingly, this B&O unit is another what if. The real one went to scrap in the mid 1980s still in B&O blue, although many other GP35s were painted for Chessie System.
