"Canfranc Spain: The European ghost train station that refuses to die.
Built in 1928, abandoned in 1970, the grand Canfranc station could be turned into a hotel (first published in October 2017).
If a building can ever be described as “unlucky” then this is a perfect example.
The Canfranc International Railway Station was a once glamorous monster of a structure. Located on the border between Spain and France.
The station had faced every imaginable hardship since it was conceived in 1853.
War, fire, and incompetence all saw the building once described as the “Titanic of the Mountains" fall into serious disrepair.
But this is a building that refuses to die and thanks to a new €27 million (NZ$46 million) investment Canfranc is set to live yet again. She will be a five-star hotel and conference center."

the reason the station was abandoned was 2 reasons 1. the bridge near the station got destroyed in a derailment 2. it was served by 2 gauges of track & transferring cargo to one train to another was headache & expensive but I seen this video of a Swiss Railway that changes gauges in mid-transit
