Magnificent train station in Canfranc Spain.

Rebuilt as a luxury hotel. Next to France in the Pyrenees Mountains.

"Canfranc Spain: The European ghost train station that refuses to die.

Built in 1928, abandoned in 1970, the grand Canfranc station could be turned into a hotel (first published in October 2017).

If a building can ever be described as “unlucky” then this is a perfect example.

The Canfranc International Railway Station was a once glamorous monster of a structure.
Located on the border between Spain and France.

The station had faced every imaginable hardship since it was conceived in 1853.

War, fire, and incompetence all saw the building once described as the “Titanic of the Mountains" fall into serious disrepair.

But this is a building that refuses to die and thanks to a new €27 million (NZ$46 million) investment Canfranc is set to live yet again.
She will be a five-star hotel and conference center."

"The idea for the building as a crossing point in the Spanish Pyrenees on the border with France began in the mid 19th century.

Was not until 1928 that the opulent structure was completed.

The building was vast with 365 windows, one for each day of the year and hundreds of doors.

And platforms more than 200 metres long.

But it was not long before problems began.

One crucial issue was the different rail gauges used in France and Spain.

This became a logistical nightmare as passengers and goods had to be transferred from one train to another.

The troubles began to pile up. The worldwide financial crash of 1929 hit then a fire in 1931 ravaged the building.

The Spanish Civil War in 1936 saw Francisco Franco close all the surrounding tunnels to stop arms smuggling.

It struggled through World War II and ended up being an escape route for many Jews and Allied soldiers.

The station limped on until 1970 when it finally closed following a train derailment into a nearby bridge.

It was decided that the bridge was too expensive to rebuild and Canfranc's fate was sealed.

The stunning facade was left to rot and buildings fell into ruin.

And the nearby village shrunk as the population faded away."

"But then a revival began. Tourists began to wander around the dilapidated station enamoured by a slice of industrial history.

A very limited train service also returned as well.

Rumours of a revival swirled in 2017 and now finally it is the focus of a major financial investment and rebuild.

A 104 room hotel designed by architects JoaquĂn MagrazĂł and Fernando Used has been approved.

The facade will stay but a new train station will be built behind it.

The Somport tunnel that links Spain and France will be reopened with the aim of an operational Canfranc line and station by 2026.

After years of ruin the "Titanic of the Mountains" looks set to rise once again."

The Titanic of the Mountains in 2023.

Luxurious hotel now. Still has the railroad charm.

Adjacent to the magnificent hotel is the new train station. Service is planned for 2026. Fun time in the Pyrenees.

The interior of the former train station.

Restored as a hotel but keeps its railroad ambience.

You can go swimming in the cold windy months in comfort.

Beautiful rooms. First class all the way.

the reason the station was abandoned was 2 reasons
1. the bridge near the station got destroyed in a derailment
2. it was served by 2 gauges of track & transferring cargo to one train to another was headache & expensive
but I seen this video of a Swiss Railway that changes gauges in mid-transit

I read it would take a few more years. At least for the Spanish service.
Continue to France does require fixing that bridge.
