I have up for bid on eBay a relatively rare 50 foot plug door boxcar...

Start time:
Jan 29, 2023 06:00:01 PM PST

Start price:
US $9.99

This Alaska Railroad 50 foot plug door boxcar is a Tyco product dating back to the early 1970s "brown box" era, probably no latter than 1973. There is one tiny chip on a rib on the car's roof, otherwise this car is in excellent condition (see pictures). All stirrups and brake wheel are intact. Paint and lettering show minimal handling wear. This car has been upgraded with "red box" era trucks with steel axles and needle point bearings. The original box is not included. Good luck and happy bidding.

Are those the Tyco red box era wheelsets? I have my doubts. those wheels are the NMRA RP25 profile, which is an upgrade over the wheelsets normally seen on Tyco equipment. DId the red box cars have RP25 wheels originally?

I'm pretty sure they are Tyco wheelsets, I found them in my container of my discarded Tyco talgo trucks and I found at least two identical pairs. They could be Mantua trucks from the 1980s perhaps. At any rate they roll better than the original trucks that came with the car.

Bidding was hot and heavy, but in the end my Alaska boxcar sold for $32.00! There were three bidders competing with each other during the last 7 minutes of the auction but a fourth bidder came in within 10 seconds of the closing time to snipe the auction with 6 seconds to spare.

That's the great thing about eBay. At a Train Show a vendor has to hope that a shopper who will recognize the value of a specific collectable will come by their table, see it, and buy it. On eBay it is really easy to bring to attention a special collectible for those who are in the market looking for such items.

The more people who are competing for ownership of a rare collectible causes the dollar value of the collectible to increase which is great if you are a seller!
