This is really sad. Another mom-and-pop train store has gone out of business. I’ve been going to this store in Kensington, MD, for 10+ years and enjoyed digging through the stacks for hard-to-find items. I was shocked when I pulled up one day in March and found a note on the door that the owner had passed away. There was no mention of what would happen with the store. I knew the owner, Bill, had two children and I was hoping that one of them would take over the store. Each time I stopped by over the next few months there was no activity at the store. I stopped by 10 days ago on my way to a doctor appointment and the store was open for business, but there was no update to the note on the front door. Bill’s children did not want to keep the store, so decided to sell. The store was open fewer days and shorter hours to clean out the junk (some rooms were not used and full of broken furniture, etc.) and hoping to find a buyer for all the trains to avoid the lengthy delay in selling a few at a time. I haven't been able to stop by the past week, so don't know the status of the store. I'm going to post my finds in here and in the other OTW forums.

Another kind of Fallen Flag- the Mom & Pop hobby store. Long story short, there was this guy who owned such an enterprise who wanted to donate some things to our model train club. I get there and find him in a wheel chair, not looking so good, and the entire back porch jammed with mostly Tyco of every description, all new in box. It was a delicate process, as he didn't want to let go. I think part of it was that he was dying and giving up this trove would remind him strongly that his time was over. We got a few pieces, and that was fun to share with other club members, many of whom started out in Tyco. We made him a plaque, thanking him for supporting the club. He passed away a week later. There was an estate sale, and much of the Tyco was not taken. It was loaded, with the remainder of the unsold items, into a dumpster. We were unaware of all this until sometime later.

Chops,
That is a sad story for two reasons. First, the passing of another mom and pop train store. Secondly, throwing so much away in the dumpster when it could have been taken away. I need to stop by my local store and see what is going on. Thanks for the heads up.
