This is my locomotive of the week. I was surprised to win it on Ebay for only $80.
This is an Atlas SD24. Unlike the Tyco ones, it has the sloped low hood that was the EMD standard from 1959-1963. I've always been a fan of those sloped noses, which were applied to six different locomotive models by EMD at customer request. These predated the far more common spartan nose introduced on the GP30 that would remain in production until 1999.
I generally shy away from 6 axle locomotives on my layout. They don't seem to like 18r curves much. It isn't that I have derailment problems with them, a GE Dash 8 has successfully run on the layout. But the extreme overhang on the ends of the locomotive swings out on curves and will derail the cars coupled to it.
The SD24 though is different. The early first generation 6 axle units are compact in size, being basically scaled up versions of 4 axle locomotives they are only lengthened enough to accommodate the longer trucks. SO I am confident this one will be able to earn its keep here.
As with all newer Atlas locomotives, this one is HEAVY. It is of similar weight to the Tyco diecast 4-6-2. it is much heavier than most of the diesels I run. I am looking forward to putting it through its paces in the next round of the locomotive trials.Edited by - jward on June 01 2022 09:01:43 AM
