Hello,
has anyone used an old boxcar to make a small warehouse (with or without the wheels) ? If you have pictures of your work, could you post them here? Thanks a lot.

Revell had a kit that features a short boxcar converted into a trackside office

Many years ago I made a trackside storage shed from a decommissioned Athearn boxcar. I built a platform from wooden matchsticks as a base and used the car floor for a long plankway. Spare details for windows and doorway

And the town of Oakland, MD made a public performance stage from a boxcar still on its trucks. Possibly chocked or welded to the rails.

Be creative and show pictures when you build one.

And I will find it picture later for this: The town of Shippensburg, PA bought a Penn Central (which formerly served the towns ‘s industries but has no RR tracks anymore) and repainted and relettered it to be part of their welcome center.

My layout has two boxcars converted for warehousing:

1) The supply shed in the switching yard:

The boxcar body is off the wheels and surrounded by a platform so a carload of supplies can be spotted there and unloaded into the shed from time to time.

2) The LCL (Less than Carload Lot) station at Batey Hollow:

The railroad has a small fleet of these old boxcars assigned to gathering, sorting and shipping small shipments, several to a car.

Same here... and now I do!

I transposed the number if ever a rivet-counting friend would look at it and say it's not the right car for the model...

Very nice, El Rojo, but there are only 546 rivets on your model, the
prototype had 548. Furthermore, those modeled are the Guelphendorph
brand of door latch, while everyone knows the Kletzermann style was
favored by the Altoona shops. The bogies are a scale six inches too far
from the beams, also. Nice try.

Rivets 547-548 were added to that car when it was converted to roller bearings. You'll notice that the prototype car has a rusty finish on the wheel faces, but journal boxes. Were there journal bearings, the wheel faces would be black with a sticky oil residue from the journal bearings leaking oil onto the wheel faces. The model has black wheel faces, indicating that it represents the car before the roller bearing conversion kits were installed in the journal boxes. That explains the discrepancy. Those six scale inches are still inexplicable, though. I favor disciplinary action against the designer of the model, such as putting tickly things in his nose.

There you go. That kit is a classic and one of the fastest ways to get a boxcar shed.

Nice try, but everybody knows this was a NYC car that wouldn't be caught dead near Altoona. The Pennsy guys would probably scrap it on sight. The rubber grommets in the glad hands are the dead giveaway to its NYC heritage.......
