The question of the heat off the barrel of the boiler into the cab was not unique to the camelback. Most steam locomotives had the part of the boiler around the fire box in the cab, which is arguably hotter than the barrel of the boiler. The backhead of the boiler, the part around the fire door, may or may not be insulated and jacketed.

I've fired a locomotive with no insulation on the backhead, meaning I had a wall of 370 degree steel next to me. That makes for warm surroundings. Getting fried bumping into it should not be a big issue. First, you're careful what you touch, and second, it's prudent to wear thick clothing so you're not instantly burned by a momentary bump into something hot.
