They can be a little tougher to find as compared to a green BN Tyco plugger... but i think they were a stand alone item, not like the Lionel Sears boxcar which was part of a set. I have two of those flatcar and trailer combos. Neither set me back more than any old second hander.

I tried Kadee's years ago, trying to keep up with the Joneses. What a hassle. Spent more time chasing springs and adjusting couplers than I did running trains. I've seen people with the skills of a watch maker get them to be reliable, but it wasn't for me. My bud, Crusty, had a little trouble, too:
