Hey Guys:

Just curious. I was thinking of adding some SD-24 from the early mid-70's that Atlas did. Probably a UP and a CB&C version. I already have a GP38HH in CNR or will have when the SF version gets here so I can do a shell swap. The SF-freight shell will be available for trade btw.

These Atlas' just make under my self imposed cutoff of 1975. Just curious which TCF members have them and their thoughts???

Thanks,
G

I have a couple Atlas/Roco SD35s and a GP38.
I am happy with them.
I did buy a couple of basket-case GP38 drives that had frames with zink rot so watch out for that.

Hey there cmgnnut:

I'd be interested as long as they are sound. What are you looking for, for one, possibly two?

I have a Santa Fe GP38 hi-nose...too cool not to...from the original '75 run and it today still pulls like a champ! Those drives were really solid and the model had plenty of weight.

Later clones from Con-Cor should be looked at twice however. I have a Mopac Con-Cor GP38 and sadly it's not much of a performer. Believe they had drives made in Mexico and they really aren't much. They do feature the same Roco tooling though and may be swaped with a different drive to produce roadnames not offered by Atlas-Roco.

Remember too, there are a few DCC equipped examples out there. Roco's DCC system featured a CSX and UP GP40 just a few years back. The shells are very similar to what was first offered by Atlas in the mid-'70s, but the drives are DCC equipped. Don't have one at present, so I can't comment on its performance.

Hello,
I have mentioned about these Roco's before.
Originally, these motors were for alerians... motors for fighter-plane flaps. Roco didn't know what to do with the surplus after the war, so they produced model train locomotives... and boy, let me tell you how well they work, as these other's have!
I'd buy anything with ROCO stamped on the bottom. I haven't encountered any Mex built ones.

"With ROCO, you'll go a long way before maintenance!" Grease monthly.

Atlas ROCO? Well, as Bob and Doug Makenzie used to say: "It's a beauty way to go!"

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out.
"I love your catenary!"
Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

I agree with you Tony on the ConCor versions made in Mexico. I have a C&O SD35 that is a terrible runner. i also have 2 Seaboard System's in SD35 Concor Mexico drives. One is good -the other derails in curves-high center wheel. These are old atlas as the Atlas name is ground off trucks
