I've bounced around a few other threads, but I think I now know enough to ask ALL my questions in place. [:)] The background: I resurrected my old Tyco set from 30+ years ago. The cars are in pristine shape and the engine still hauls well (needs traction tires, but that's minor). My track is crap. It's badly tarnished and will not stay joined. So I need new track and I've learned from you all not to expect the engine to be very reliable, so I will also get a new HO engine. With that info in mind, here's my questions:

  • Are there advantages and disadvantages to buying a set? I assume there's a price savings, but I don't know if quality is compromised when you purchase that way. I want an engine, controller, and track that will last (but I want to save money, too!).!
  • Is there a universal coupler that allows dissimilar cars to join? I'm not averse to buying new cars, but I would like to use the Tyco cars since they are like new.
  • I always try to support my local hobby shops, but sometimes you need more than they can deliver. What online shops do the members here prefer?

Finally, I want to applaud this forum's members for being so beginner friendly!

Walther's sells a set based on Athearn locomotives and rolling stock. Those would be the ones you'd want to look at.

There is a coupler used by IHC called the Magic Mate that is very reliable and links with both Kadee (knuckle) and horn hook (Tyco). I use them myself when I can find them.

I don't do alot of online shopping myself, my hobby shop is associated with the L&N Historical Society and all profits go there. www.walthers.com is pretty up to date with everything out there, their prices being their only low point.

shaygetz, My father & I used to be members of the L&N Historical Socitey, and in contact w/Steve Johnson right before he moved. He was a HUGE Tennessee Central fan. In fact, Steve helped kindle my interest in modeling the prototype with a hint of free-lancing and selective compression.

GiC is in the Kentucky area, so I'm sure he's got some butternut flowin' in his veins, too! Either that...or some red-eye gravy from The Hummingbird's Country Ham breakfast. Shoooo-WEEEE!

I'm bouncing around the idea of joining again...now that sawdust is gittin' ready to fly in the garage.

All the best fellow L&N'ers...and everyone else...even those butt-naked Pennsy modelers.

You can take the man to the country, but you can't always put the country in the man.

LOL Old Reliable, he's not a gravy man. I don't think he'd dig red-eye gravy. I for sure knows he doesn't car for sawmill gravy. My country-country cooking has gotten super rusty because he just doesn't dig it.

Beans and cornbread are a meal to me, but I have to get it back home - not cook it for us. Can you tell him what he's missing? Generations of country cooking going to waste here... LOL.

HA!
Once I let on that I am originally from Mississippi...there is always an awkward silence for about 3 seconds (as opposed to the obligatory 8, LOL)...and then a forced, uncomfortable consternation of, "Oh, well...ummm...sure is HOT down there in the summer," or a better one, "Wow...lots of great down-home cooking down there, huh?" [:0]

I simply smile [:D] and tell 'em all that "Atticus Finch lets us sit n'his office 'cuz its got arr-cundishun n'all, n' that Aint Bee will be expectin us fer supper soon...Barney will be picking up Thelma Lou on the way down , y'hear?"

It's an icebreaker, every time. Really! [:D]

I GARRONTEEE!!! [:D] [:D] [:D]

Theoldreliable-Try being born and raised in Cleveland Oh and transplanted to Southern middle Tennessee. I get three words out of my mouth and people ask "Where ya'll from Yankee?"[V]

Badun-Bachman has some descent sets. Some of them come with a DCC locomotive and controller. It's entry level DCC but it's enough to get you going. I think one of them even has 2 loco's and a couple turnouts.
