Can't wait to see what those steel sawhorses look like once you've restored them.

I would go to Lowe’s and buy some sawhorse kits And make some nice looking ones . It would be a lot less work with a lot better end results.

SANDBLASING RESULTS. Here is a series of 3 pics of an axle/brake bracket that I sandblasted. The rusty piece in lower pic, and the center pic shows the same piece after I sandblasted it spotless to bare metal. The top pic is primed with PPG DP-40 gray green epoxy primer with new rubber seal... This piece is 41 years old...

I am sure you can find discarded milk crates to temporary hold up the board.
I did that for years with my old 4 by 6 HO scale layout.
Just a thought.

I'd just paint those sawhorses as is, maybe a can of Rustoleum and a 3" brush. Although if they're outside, they might be a bit too cold to paint right now. I think it's great that you can use a piece of your family history for you train platform!

How many and what direction do you need, Busss? I have some that might work for you. No charge.
Did the EZ track thing a while back, it certainly has its advantages, but not so good with making small adjustments to radius. I know you been after a layout for a good many years, and I am glad to help out.

pic of board on sawhorses with some things on it but no track cause its all upstairs
yeah I slow but thats the fun of this Right? I admit the Lionel bridge is large & odd with HO scale stuffs but do we want accuracy & in scale? NO!
A question How wide should HO scale streets be? I kinda wanna do a 4 lane on the Main Street since it is gonna be the highway for now maybe a 3 lane OR may do it on the street that crosses Main St instead
need buildings too from Plasticville hehe

Decades ago, the standard lane width was 10.5 feet. Now it's 12. I'm not quite sure when it changed. I do remember that when I was learning to drive in the mid-1970s, a lot of highways had a crack in the pavement 10.5 feet from the center line, where they had widened the old lane and then the pavement cracked over the seam. To me, as a neophyte driver, it felt like the car wanted to buck all over with the wheel on that patched crack.
If you want to use Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars, the 12 foot width might look better, because they're usually a little bigger than HO.
Anyway, multiply the lane width you choose by the number of lanes that you need, and divide by 87 for HO scale.

Putting support under the board will help if you ever want to expand the layout too. Those sawhorses have plenty of extra room for growth. Looking forward to seeing this layout come to life!

Sand paper tends to scratch up the rails leaving grooves to accumulate dirt. If you have a Bright Boy, that's a good way to cut through crusty old tarnish. I think I've heard of people using very fine sand paper, though. A number that sticks in my mind is 1200 grit.

For me, it's Wahl's Hair Clipper Oil. Works like a charm. I suspect it is very similar in composition to LaBelle's, the difference being that Wahl's is like $2 for a 4 ounce bottle. I've believe I've read that abrasives also create micro grooves in rail heads that generate micro arcing and sparking that promotes oxide buildup, as well. Wahl's suppresses that electrical activity, also.

I would definitely avoid sandpaper for cleaning rails. The scratches will collect dirt and make futuer cleaning more difficult. A Brite Boy (track cleaning eraser) works well. Fine grade emery cloth is okay. Goo-gone can help with really dirty track. Don't forget that the wheels on locomotives and rolling stock need cleaning, too.

Busss, I know you really well, and the cheapest method is a regular old-fashioned pink eraser.
They work well for cleaning track - keeping it clean, well, I recommend Labelle's Track Cleaning Solution, but only every once in a while.
