Hi Guys.
Was moving stuff around. I found something I have had for along time. A "Tyco 55 Piece Scenic City" Cut outs. The Number on the corner is: Stock No. 125:250.

I found it cataloged in a Tyco 1974-75 Catalog. There no mention of it in the 1975-1976 Catalog and no mention of it from 1976 to 1979. No mention in the 1969-70 Catalog. I do not have any catalogs between 1971-73. I found the Tyco scenes Board that Tony mentions on the Tyco resources Page and is Cataloged in my 1982 catalog. I did not see mention of this Cut Out Set on the resources pages.

It is Very Interesting to look at. It has buildings, stores and other layout accessories. The Train station has the name of "Woodbury" on it. Probably referring to Tyco Industries In Woodbury Heights New Jersey. Also has a "Woodbury" : Switching Tower, Crossing Shanty, Fire Department, National Bank. Then, There is: Ed's Hot Dogs, Mayfair Hotel, Hank's Grill, Nelson's Department Store, Cavalier Hotel w/Buggy Whip Restaurant. I wonder if any of these businesses reflect the businesses that were around when this was made.

I did a google check on some of the names. There is a Mayfair Hotel in Sewell, NJ which is not far from Woodbury Heights and Mantua, NJ. Could not find any of others. The fact that is a Mayfair Hotel could mean that they could have used names of businesses that might have been around back then. Then there are buildings with no name: Schwinn Bicycles, Barber Stop, Motel, Bakery, Water Tower. There are Billboards: McDonald's, Ford, Shell, Texaco, Milk, Drive Safely. Along with outhouse, Crossing gates, Street signs.

Has anyone else seen this set..??
Have included a picture of the Envelope that the cut out pages were in. Will take more pictures later of the 4 pages of cut outs.

Carl

V-HO:
Tyco set #7517 (EMD-F, reefer, non-operating hopper and caboose) features the 55 piece city as one of its constituent parts. It reposes in the sleeve you illustrated at the box bottom of the set. Its presence as a set component is telegraphed by the transformer box in the lower right hand corner of the master box. Instead of the usual brown box, the 7517 set's transformer box bears a full color photo of the assembled 55 piece city.
I don't recall this item included in any other set but assume it was. I also assume it was available for separate sale but--judging from its relative scarcity--suppose it was a lousy seller. Too bad! It is, as you point out, a very intriguing Tyco offering.
As a long-time collector of Monte, Built-rite, Ideal and other paper structures I bought my plain-jane 7517 set just to procure the paper city. In this age of color copiers I guess it would be fun to reproduce.
Thanks for conjuring up yet another Tyco obscurity from your vault!

Hi MagAc. The scenic city was available separately for a very short time. It was listed in the 1974-75 catalog for a mere $2.50. I do not think you could get one now for that amount. [:D]

V-HO:
Went back thru the paper archive from the seventies and found the "Scenic City" in what I assume is its first catalog appearance in the '73-'74 Tyco catalog, merchandising package and price list, like the following year listed at $2.50. Since it only appeared briefly I will agree it is pretty scarce. I've always been a bit confused by the set number of the brown box set mentioned in my reply: set no. 7517. It doesn't correspond to any set number catalogued in my materials. I suspect it may have been a "put-together" to eliminate certain remaindered items, chief among them being a pile of unsold "scenic city" sets.
Who knows? After all, its Tyco, where there seems to be a mystery around every corner.

There are two versions of this one...one has the McD's and Texaco addies, the other is all generic. I have both versions.

Licensing agreement woes:
Upon closer inspection the "culprit" in the matter of the scenic city set appears to be McDonalds. I suppose it was yet another of Tyco's classic licensing blunders. The set envelope illustrated by Vintage HO shows the McDonalds billboard. The set envelope enclosed with Tyco train set #7517 has the McDonalds billboard crudely "erased" by the art department with a simple TYCO label substituted. The actual substitute billboard shows both a train and slot car set with the verbage "HO scale electric trains" and "Tycopro racing systems."
The master set transformer box, which has the scenic city illustrated in full color shows neither billboard: a solid red "blank" has been substituted, so its pretty clear McDonalds was the fly in the ointment. The Texaco billboard is in the "generic" set and illustrated on the full color box.
Poor Tyco. You'd have thought after the Spirit of 76 disaster their corporate team would have avoided more licensing snafus.

Actually, Tyco wasn't the only one to run afoul of the Clown.

May I driect your attention to the infamous, Life-Like "Buildems" McDonald's. Released and then quickly recalled, even worn and crudely built examples can fetch three figures on ebay. I know somebody who has two of them on his layout - they're interesting kits, dated by the "New Filet 'o Fish" placard dangling under the golden arches.

Considering that both Tyco and LifeLike had kits prepared, released, and recalled at roughly the same time, I suspect more draconian tactics on McDonald's part are to blame.

One may also note that over the years, other main contemporary grease vendors like Burger King, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and KFC have been reprised in HO... with McDonald's conspicuously absent to this day...

Hi Guys. I finally had time to make pictures of the 4 pages of cut-outs. Buildings & Signs look better in color instead of the tan envelope. You would think companies would appreciate (McD's) that Model Railroaders would take the time to included them on their layouts.
Free advertising... Product recognition with children who look at the layout scenes.
Anyway, will be doing a train show this Sunday. Who knows what treasures I might find. Hopefully something I can share. [:D] Carl

The more I contemplate the 7517 set with Scenic City the more I'm curious about its genesis. Do any of the readers have a price list showing set 7517? The set, which I purchased sealed NOS, is clearly marked as number 7517 on the box side. The materials enclosed again refer to this set number. The price list and catalog enclosed, both dated 1978, DO NOT list this set or the Scenic City separate. The cars are entirely generic, with wide-vision ATSF caboose. All brown boxes bear standard side-stamp ID. The standard-issue SF warbonnet is one of the less-frequently encountered version made in Austria with standard paper stock insert. The only real anomalies are the Scenic City set and the full-color illustration of the city set applied to a liner that slides over the standard-issue transformer box, allowing potential buyers to see the set thru the master box window. As what is evidently a 1978 release I'm supposing it was merely an after-thought effort intended to liquid masses of unsold inventory of the Scenic City, having not catalogued same since 1975. But I sure don't know. Any thoughts?

Wow - thanks Vintage HO and Tony for the scans of those pages in at full size - they'll be fun to assemble! (I'm a sucker for tab/slot cardstock/paper buildings.)

My first layout buildings as a kid, were from a Wild West Town punch out card stock building book. They were pretty nice and since my parents didn't have a lot of spare money - they fit the bill nicely to build a town for my train set. Over the years, they were used so much that they disintegrated - but I never really needed anything else to enjoy my trains.

Recently, I started taking digital photos of interesting buildings around where I live and hope to assemble the images in PaintShop Pro to make complete HO-Scale 4 sided tab/slot cardstock buildings.

I like caffeine and a chainsaw ...
