8 hour print, about $1.00 in materials
model link https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:670492/files

I asked "what is this car called" in another subforum because I wanted one as we have a number of them on the local tracks often
very nice model, maybe light on fine details, but that makes the overall model print better

currently printing the shipping container. 6 hour print, about $0.75

I have numerous stuff being delivered today including ebay auction lots of "stuff" that might have trucks that I can scavenge for this

(all pics upload at large resolution so you can click on them and get really good closeup views of all the dirt and dust on my layout)

meant for screwed in trucks, have it sitting on tyco trucks, might drill them out to fit

worst details here, all on the underside so you wont see them unless you look real hard. a superb model tweaked for printing

then again, I expected this to print uglier than it did nothing was supporting this, these parts were layed on as you see them

That's a good, clean print! What printer are you using?

This is the real trick. It's not about having a perfectly accurate 3D model, it's about having one that's optimized for 3D printing.

Sunlu S8, a cr-10 clone. was 199 on prime day and I've wanted one bigger than my cr-10 mini(which I love)

In my day it was the mimeograph. Along came the Xerox machine- the
size of a freight car- putting out inky, shiny copies. Now this.

Interesting. I'm almost positive I've heard the name Sunlu before; I had no idea they made printers. Obviously it's putting out good results. I've been running an Ender 3 since last year and love it so far.

I've heard good things about the ender 3, I like it's grandfather the cr-10(mini)

Sunlu makes filament, and looks like a lesser quality printer than creality, but everything I've tossed at it came out well, except the test print, but I think the sample filament was bad. as per reviews it was obviously built wrong, but i have NOT touched anything on it, because I wanna see if it fails and where it fails

I also have one of the kossel prototypes that I can almost get to work, and a monoprice v2 that work until you move it, but lately I am past the "3d print ALL the things" so it only get used once in a while

No need to upgrade/change anything if it's all working. My Ender's plastic extruder arm has been upgraded to aluminum (out of necessity) and I bought a glass bed, but otherwise it's stock. Sounds like you have a good collection of printers. I intend to buy a resin printer eventually, but for now the one printer is enough.

That's a really nice print! I have a resin printer which is great on the details but very limited in the size it can print. I can only print items up to 4.5 inches long. Great job!

ever print horn hooks, ladders or brake wheels?

Just found a STL for hooks and am attempting to print them now, I am guessing it'll fail. I need to install one of the .1 nozzles on one of my printers for dedicated small parts

I'm running a 0.4mm nozzle, but have a few of the smaller sizes from buying bulk packs. If you try it, I'd be interested in seeing your results.

the tyco hook STL file I have is printed (with .1 layers and .4 nozzle)
the springs are too long
the main body is too narrow
the hole fits
and it does couple, but real stiff

I am going to need to scan and redesign it
ordered .2 nozzles for my monoprice v2, which I've been planning on making a dedicated fine parts printer, as it is direct drive and works well once the frame is properly adjusted(it flexes every time i move it)
I have .2 nozzles for my cr-10 mini, but I like keeping that one for quick printing
but the sunlu s8 might be replacing it

I'm impressed you were able to print a functional horn hook at all. I would have thought the spring tail would be far too thin. That probably explains the stiffness you report.

That's awesome.

Say, once you perfect your Tyco horn hook coupler design, can I order 100 of them?

And, perhaps I can place a special order for Tyco Sharknose horns?

no, I am pretty sure it is because of the wrong thickness where the hook fits in the pocket

so yeah, measure, replicate, and alter in fusion 360, print, test, adjust, reprint

the springtail inthe model I found is thicker/stiffer than a normal horn hook, but i think the difference in plastics makes up for it

heck, lets have some pics

left is what is called printed on a raft, right is printed with a brim
the ones on the raft had rougher top surfaces, but the springs on them came out better, I thinkI am going to print that way from now on for tiny parts

black is a tyco hook for reference
now to confuse you, the ones on the left are printed with a brim, see the nice glass smooth tops of the hooks?
(click for stupid-high level zoom)
the ones on the right are on the raft, notice how all of them got rough spots on the tops of the part that goes into the pocket, that is what is snug, and not easy to sand at this size
notice the springs in the hooks in the upper left

extreme close up notice the one on the right has a more consistent shape on the spring
also notice the decoupler peg is not in the right spot? try to run that thru a decoupler

end view, look off?

other side, nice and close, you see that the top of the hook is a different level than the rest of the part, this causes a mess as can be seen, it'll be one of the spots I experiment with in design

see other post as to what I'd need for pics for replication, clear close picture of nearly all angles with a ruler for reference, preferably straight on shots of top, front, side, just like blueprints

and I don't know about 100 of them, they might be kind of pricey (that price is wrong, it should be about double that, plus design work and handling)

hey, can anyone tell me what the decoupler peg does BESIDES decouple? looking closely at the tyco hook, I could design that without the peg and print it rightside up and eliminate a lot of problems

I think that the bracket that holds the uncoupling peg also keeps one coupler from slipping out the top or bottom of another. I don't know if it's a design feature or just a fortunate side effect.

not at all, just need pics with rulers for reference

should also be able to do prototypes, the only issue is that (ummm) the smallest available detail that can be reproduced will be (does math)...an inch?
assume .4mm resolution, times 87 for scale, then divide by 25.4 to get inches

that sounds wrong. I would guess that 3-5 inches might be the smallest detail you could see. 1 inch would mean that you could print a face and have the ears show, and I know that is hard to do at 64 scale (d&d figures)

how big are sharknose air horns, the skinny bit?

What parts are you looking for? Details like doors and window frames could be handled by the current generation of home resin printers. Larger stuff like walls and roofs could be done on FDM printers with a slight loss of detail. For instance, if one wanted to reproduce the walls of the Plasticville Motel it shouldn't be a problem. The printer likely wouldn't be able to capture the dimpled effect that the original walls have, but otherwise the dimensions would be the same. An FDM printer could probably do the windows and doors as well, tbh.

For reference, here's an HO scale bus done entirely on an FDM printer. Note the detail of the doors. It isn't perfect, but the small windows and gap between the doors came out fine.
