ok, I got a thought
as I am thinking of getting into the hobby again, I keep asking myself "why? what's the goal here?"
I didn't live near railroads when I grew up I only was exposed to the hobby for a very few number of years, which competed with other hobbies I have I never had any real good connection to anything railroad related
what started this about a month back was trying to figure out which steam engine the spirit of 76 was modeled off of. ok, I got that answer, the Sierra Railway No. 3
which is a very popular steam engine as seen in the wiki for it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sierra_No._3
so one idea a train modeler might wanna do is recreate the rolling stock(?) if not the whole layout for one (or more, or all) of the movies and TV shows it was on
I might take a stab at it, but that's a LOT of train, probably with a lot of custom/kitbashed cars
has anyone done this?

note: my real affection for trains is more along the control systems, so I'll end up with a ton of turnouts, remote controls, block switches and other stuff I think, it would be interesting to see the above tho
my 1st step, get a train set and then get what I had as a kid, then????(completely different story)

One famous role for Sierra No. 3 was the Hooterville Cannonball in the TV show Petticoat Junction. There wouldn't be much rolling stock to recreate for that one. The Cannonball was the locomotive and a shorty combine car.

That would be an epic undertaking! The list of movies and TV shows the locomotive appeared in is quite extensive. I love the fact that it was used in BTTF3, but wasn't built until 6 years after the scenes in the movie were set. It really can travel in time I would be neat to see some of the variations of the loco side by side.

it would be an insane undertaking
when I first came up with the idea I was tempted, but I would have limited myself to certain things, like all movies that were made after I was born, but that was still too big a list, so I posted here

Turn outs are interesting, but having them closely arranged can be quite problematic, particularly with Tyco locomotives stalling on frogs, derailing. Might suggest you experiment with two or thee turnouts on a test track and see how a locomotive, perhaps a few cars, behaves at different speeds, in different routing configurations, like a cross over, before you go in deep on buying numerous turn outs. The results might surprise you. The Expander layout has numerous rerailers designed in because the stuff derails so much. I built that layout. It can be done, but the number of stalls and derailments goes up proportionately to the clustering of switches. Nonetheless, this is a most interesting idea and well worth the discussion!

yeah, I just read your opinion of the layout expander in another thread
good stuff to think about
I was thinking of exchanging the 3rd loop in it for a switchyard and turntable, if it could fit
don't even have track or engine yet so ask me about the progress in a few months :)

Sounds like an interesting idea for a layout, and good luck if you do choose to pursue that.
I personally like the idea of "fantasy" layouts, and have built 4 of them so far, on the small side.
