From what I heard the engines were closer to falling through the bottom than off the side.

That's crazy, thru the bottom! I am so glad the crew was OK. All that weight, all that momentum. My best friend is an engineer, and a little while back he clipped a stuck car carrier. The automobile bounced off the hood, but given just another few inches, it could have just as easily blown through the cab taking out the crew.

This guy has been like a brother to me the last 30 years. He has also taken out two frac sand trucks who were trying to beat the train.
The beauty is that after this happened, the truck driver was cussing him out for not stopping!!! How my friend kept his cool and didn't deck this stupid...just fill in the blank, I will never know. I'd be in jail.

I remember when some people called the wide front hood locomotives safety cabs. Seeing how that hood deflected the car, I understand why.

I had a close frind who was an engineer who had hit 7 cars during his career. He said it's hard to believe how many people will try to beat the train ...

As an engineer, I guarentee there's a way to make train-car collisions mostly survivable. The reason people die in collision is pretty simple. That big coupler is a giant hook point that the car crumples around, and the boxy pilots of locomotives. I'm trying to think of a way to make a device that can be mechanically moved out in an emergency, that is curved. The key to making these collisions survivable is making the train hit it with less force, i.e. give a train a curved front end at car level, that will throw the car free of the tracks, rather than drag it under. You more or less have to make a train hit a car like a suburban sideswiping a car.
