Last week, I snagged what I think was a great deal ($14 total, including shipping) on this Tyco Canadian National (CN) F9 A-unit #6536, listed as "does not run - needs maintenance" by the US seller. Besides the description, I noticed right off the bat that since it featured the screw-in trucks and fuel tank weight cover, it was from the early "Red Box Era" (c. 1960's) and had no broken stepladders or horns, which surprised me the most.
Well, it just arrived today, and here are photos of its condition after I took it out of the box. As I knew from the pics previously, it would need a cleaning, a new front coupler, 1 truck cover re-glued, and maintenance - I doubted the seller's description of it as not working, for beings that it featured the infamous MU-2 style motor - and they practically are indestructible, I figured some oiling was all it would take to get it running strong again.

Replaced the front coupler, and then placed it on the tracks. Immediately upon applying power, the motor started to crank, but it kept hesitating and barely wanted to run (not surprised based on its condition and age, like most MU-2 motors.) So, I added a few drops of Labelle lubricant to the gears, and after a few minutes, it roared back to life!!! It runs perfectly fine!
All that was left was to re-glue the truck cover back on, and wipe it off. Tyco CN F9 restored! And this is my first Tyco locomotive in a Canadian Railroad's livery - proudly added to the RETRO TYCO collection.

Thanks Chops!
Alex, nope, that is the original, however, it is worn off on the "N" part.

Great snag RP. I think I was looking at this unit, but with work I've been too tired for big projects. I wish I would of though, as I can look out my bedroom window at a Canadian National main line.

Yeah I could see that, that's why I thought it was somebody's old decal. Perhaps taking a fine brush to the "N" could restore it; or is the "CN" yellowed that it would look weird if touched up? Looks sorta yellowed to me.

Yep, it is definitely the original decal as it's yellowed badly. I kinda like it though...it adds to its age, as it is 50+ years old.

In that case I guess it's best to leave it.
