Ah, finally. I tried and tried and spent way too much money trying to fix my old Rocket to no avail. Utter failure. I am getting one. This extraordinary invention by the geniuses George and Robert Stephenson must join the Henley Fleet. George got most of the credit, but his son, Robert, was right there, I'd dare say as co-inventor. George may have had the Grand Plan, but Robert was right there every step of the way working out the details, and there were a LOT of details building the first practical steam locomotive.
There were other steam locomotives, but not so practical except in very limited applications and were no faster than dray horses, except they could haul a good deal more.
I started at the top of the list of US Hornby Stockists, and found one, Joes Trains, or something, and he thinks he has one on order, though his is not sure what the Rocket was or its significance. Oh well, I'll buy it anyways.
I remain flabbergasted at the sheer persistence and determination of the Stephenson team. Every little thing that could give them trouble gave them trouble and they basically did everything short of smelting the iron ore. Precision machining of these parts: utterly amazing.
I oft wondered how they did the first firing of the Rocket, or other first gen steamers. "Hey, McNeal, yeah you, grab your shovel and stoke this boiler." Then stand back and watch if McNeal is blown to smithereens.
Actually, come to find out, they had a much more clever method: hydrostatic pressure testing. Pump the boiler full of cold water to the desire pressure and see where the leaks and bulges appeared.
In this manner, we know that Robert wrote his father in alarm that the back plate had bulged 1/8th of an inch, and how could this be rectified? How they could measure such things is beyond my imagination, and how did they know that 1/8th of an inch was a lethal measurement?? In any event, I think it was Robert who came up with solution to install staybolts to string the whole combobulation together.

Great read as always, Chops. The new rocket is like the NT 4-4-0. We get better running qualities along with improved looks. The motor in that thing must be SMALL!
