Last week had a chance to duck into the El Paso History Museum, and came upon this photograph. I've seen others like it, but not this one, and the plate # is clearly 246 of the ATSF. Dated to 1885. I believe this depot structure is still standing in downtown El Paso. I know the locomotive is ATSF, because on the original it stands out quite clearly on both cab and tender.
Two of the train men (?) appear to be wearing pith helmets, which, for the blistering sun, would be good head gear.
On a time line, the railroad, under the Southern Pacific, arrived in 1881. From there El Paso exploded from a village of mud wattles to a city of brick and steel.
I tried to access ATSF archives to see if I could find any history on this locomotive, but was unable. Anybody got a handle on researching this stuff?
