My SOTW is something I got at the last train show I went to on Sunday. It's an old Roco Minitrains H0/e set. The only thing it really seems to be missing is the track. The locomotive and rolling stock are in very good condition, and with some basic maintenance (as the manual that came with it recommended), it runs like a champ (aside from a couple of iffy spots on my N scale track, which is a problem with the track, not the locomotive ). It also has a complete building kit with the instructions. The entire set cost me a total of, get this, $10. I absolutely adore this little guy for how cute it is. It's also extremely easy to get to the motor and gears to do maintenance on it. All you have to do is just pull off the shell. That's it. It's as simple as it sounds. It's held in with two plastic clips by the cab that come off extremely easily, but not too easily that it'll just come off at random intervals. The freight cars are ridiculously tiny, and kind of a pain to get on the track because of the size, although I'm quickly finding out how to do it fairly efficiently (just have to gently push them together unlike with other N scale cars). Love this little guy. When I saw it going for only $10, I could not for the life of me pass it up.

That Roco is the bomb! Does it run on N as in HOn3? That would be such a cool branch line.
Toptrain, I had to do a double take, I have two of those coaches that survived my Dad's youth, probably circa late 1930's? Do you know who made those pieces and when??? Dad was more a steam ship guy than a train guy, but we did enjoy both together.

Well, did the Google thing, and this is as close as I could find to your Rocket Strombecker. Looking through the other offerings, a lot of very interesting aviation pieces, the trains looked a whole lot more like Playschool than this semi-accurate wood model you have. Thanks for posting, it is neat to discover something once close to a forbearer.

Oh yeah, it runs on N scale track. The locomotive uses essentially a motor and mechanism that they were already using on N scale models, just they plopped an H0 narrow gauge sized shell on top of it. Again, it’s a surprisingly well made little mechanism and motor considering how tiny it is. It also appears that Roco actually used to work with AHM when they made their Minitrains line in the 1970’s; which is interesting. I looked up the brand and Roco is still making these little guys today. If I had to guess when this set was made, I’d say probably 80’s or 90’s. I still can’t believe how cheap I got this set, though. Its probably because it’s such an obscure scale in the US, honestly.

Just for clarification, HOn30 is HO scale trains running on N gauge track. HOn3 (far more common than HOn30 these days) uses a wider gauge than N gauge.
I too have one of those Strombecker Rock Island kits, plus part of a second set. I swapped out the wooden dummy trucks on one of the coaches for HO scale coach trucks and Kadee couplers. It needs a bit more work, but it'll be a working model at some point.
