Today while checking out my local hobby shop's used
HO equipment shelves, I found this peculiar looking
0-6-0 switch engine. I am usually pretty good at
identifying model manufacturers products but this one
has me stumped. I can't find a makers mark anywhere
on it and the tender is missing. Does anyone out there
know who made this????

This model currently doesn't operate, as a matter of fact it short circuits my
transformer when I connect power leads to it. It would be nice if I could
get a hint on who made this thing at least!

That's an old Athearn 0-6-0 made sometime in the early to mid 1960's. Here's a picture of it in the 1962 Athearn catalog.

"A lot of modellers out there who go to these train shows see broken HO stuff and go, 'This is useless' when, in reality, they can still be used for modeling whether it's as a prop on your layout or a cool project to make something old new again."

Thanks for the info! You know I suspected it was an Athearn product
judging from the motor design but the hobby shop owner couldn't
remember if Athearn made an 0-6-0. Anyway thanks for the tip!

As you can see from the next two photos, I went to "HO Seeker"
to print out an instruction sheet for this model and then disassembled
it to see why it wasn't running....

After taking the model apart, I confirmed that the motor was
in working order so that wasn't the problem. It was only when I removed
the gear box that I found a problem. The axle gear is cracked...

Of course this doesn't explain the electrical short, but with a broken axle gear
this locomotive is not going to move under its own power. I don't suppose
someone out there has an old geared axle part 11641 they are willing to part with?

While they're not identical, this tender and the one Mantua used on its Prairie locomotives and its 2-6-6-2 are so very similar as to probably be off of the same prototype.

I wonder if a metal ferrule on the plastic sleeve on either side of the gear would pull the crack shut enough to make the gear work. A short stub if metal tubing that's a tight press fit onto the outside should do if the right size could be found.

That is a good idea Don, but I think I am done with this engine. Would you like to have it?
I will let you have it FOC!

That cracked drive gear is what killed Athearn steam locomotives. It is common to all of their first steamers. Then with their Genesis 4-6-2 and 2-8-2 having the same problem. I bought 2 of each and only one mike Would run. The inability of athearn to make a gear of a steamer and even 50% reliability was unattainable for them. They refused to seed me replacement parts. So since that day I refuse to buy anything new with their name on it. For me that has been a long time. Also at $12 you overpaid for a useless piece of junk. The only use for it is in a HO junk yard. From what I see of yours you won't even have to weather it.

The asking price was $12.00 but I payed a little less for it, not that I am complaining.
Taking a risk is part of the deal when purchasing locos marked "As is" or "does not run",
for me it is worth the price just for the fun of tinkering with something unusual. I took a
chance on a Varney F3 a couple months ago and had a lot of fun trouble shooting it and
getting it to run again. There are all kinds of reasons why a model won't work, more often
than not, with a little TLC many of these "junk box rejects" can be turned into little treasures.
Keep in mind, I could get this little 0-6-0 running again if I can find just find a replacement
geared wheel set.

It would be great if you had a possible replacement you could part with, let me know if
you have any luck!
