I was thinking about what it might have been like on Amtrak, Day One, and
put this video together. The Santa Fe coaches, I believe, was something they
did, as Amtrak was putting together its fleet from spares.

Has it been half a century already?

From various people in the industry, I have formed the impression that Amtrak, as it exists today,
follows congressional funding districts at the expense of corridors that would be heavily traveled.
The absence of direct El Paso to Santa Fe - Denver service, is one such example, or El Paso to Chicago
is another.

The second impression is that Amtrak, at least thus far, prices its seats to control the volume of
passengers that might otherwise "overbook" certain routes, instead of increasing service. That is
surprising, but then, when I've looked into trying to book a certain destination I find that some trains
are fully booked months in advance, at prices that are the same as first class airline service.

The new administration appears quite eager to spend money, and upon Amtrak, too boot. Well, this will
be interesting. Maybe we will get high speed train service to Hawaii, after all.

Interesting clip, I've not seen it. Sweet little croaky voice of the narrator. The whole shebang is pure
veneer, but still interesting.

Back in the 70's I was in a de-railment on the Metroliner leaving DC back to Newark station. I don't know what they hit, but I could feel the ballast hitting the bottom of the coach car I was riding in. The regular train picked us up in the middle of no-where in Md. We had to jump to the train picking us up. I didn't get home until 3am. IIRC, this was in 1977 or 1978. I don't have a good record with transportation....
