Hey, glad to be back on this forum! And I've got something good to kick off this week's Locomotive Of The Week thread...
My Bachmann Spectrum Baldwin Consolidation steam locomotive, in the ATSF roadname of course! This is the mid-2000s DCC-ready version. Aside from missing a couple details (I could probably get a new cowcatcher from Bachmann), when I first got it I was told it had a short in the tender, but it turns out it was because the wheels in the tender trucks were positioned incorrectly. So I re-installed them as shown on the diagram, plugged a TCS DPX2-UK decoder into the board, and now it runs very well. (Though after plugging in the decoder, I had to remove the original yellow capacitor as instructed on the TCS website, as the decoder has its' own capacitor built in.) Very nicely detailed, and the shell even feels metallic in a way. Bachmann still makes this locomotive today, but it's no longer branded as a Spectrum model, but still has the same high quality, and even comes in a DCC sound-equipped version! Of course, I am using this to pull my Christmas train. After the holidays are over, I may bring it into regular revenue freight service, alongside my diesels!

My LOTW is this presumably Varney loco. Or possibly early Life-like?
It's the ex Penn Line shell, but it has a strange Japanese 8-wheel drive I've never seen before. Anyone familiar with it?

Nice, Wiley! Good video, too.
I've never seen a spring used before as a drive line. I've used plastic fuel tubing on a couple of pieces, and it worked out well. I wonder if the spring, when under torque, would coil just enough to guide the locomotive through any temporary dead spots?

A vintage Horby takes to the rails of the Layout Henley. Must be at least forty years old, and has a few samll details fix. She is a grand old lady and pulls hard

Awesome locomotives, guys!!
Here's my LOTW offering:
I now have both versions of Tyco's "Silver Streak" ALCO C430 locomotive!! The "chrome roof" version I've had for a year or so, while the "red roof" loco was recently obtained in another great trade with microbusss.

I've seen it before (a bunch of rather poor N scale Model Power locos used it, and on the more positive end I've seen an elaborate Lindsay flexible coupling, used with their power trucks to get 8-wheel-drive, which was *three* nested springs of different pitches and spring rates, to avoid harmonic vibration and quivering.
Because unfortunately, the torque-windup you mention does happen, and while it's not enough to get the loco over dead spots, it's enough to make it quiver at low speeds...
This particular spring-drive seems to work OK for what it is. I just can't figure out why it even exists, I thought I'd seen every drive ever used under this body shell. Even the plastic is weird, it seems to be nylon or something similar.
