From the start of my RETRO TYCO layout project, I have wanted to add an operating crane to the layout....unfortunately, I don't believe I would be able to fit the USS Steel "Giant Operating Crane" anymore due to the fact that it needs "straight-rail" track in order to function properly....
BUT, what about Tyco's Gantry Crane #7777? Can it be added to curve track (I'm thinking possibly the following location on RETRO TYCO - see photo #2,) and still work right, or does it absolutely need straight track??? Any help would be appreciated - and thanks for considering!!

I've never seen one in person, but the picture on the box looks like it wants to straddle a straight track. It looks like there are rails on the base that sit on either side of the track and they look to be straight, 9" long and too close together to allow for a curve in the tracks.

Scsshaggy probably right. From my other pieces such a design would not work on a curve. Got room for another siding? Such a major cool piece.

Yep, that's what I figured. Thanks for the confirmation guys, and I will consider another siding......

I have seen this model up close and personal. As I recall, the wheels on this crane are molded dummies that don't roll. However, with some ingenuity you could attach rolling wheels to the legs of the crane and you may be able to get it to negotiate curves. If you try this project I would recommend adding as much weight as you can inside the crane to aid in tracking. Good luck!

Hmmm....didn't think about that. I will keep the Gantry Crane in mind, then - thanks for the info, Srenchin!
