Some time back, I picked up a Mantua bobber caboose at a cheap price ($1, I think):

It sat in a box, for a long while. Lately, I've been thinking of adding a transfer train to the operating scheme of my layout. There'll be a train staged in a hidden track, that'll come to the main yard on my layout like the transfer trains that run between the yards of various railroads located near each other. Such trains are usually small, and since they run a short distance don't have much in the way of a caboose. In the old days, a bobber would do.
I set about upgrading my little bobber to run an look a little better on my layout. First, I wanted Kadee couplers to match the rest of my equipment, and then I wanted metal wheels. Intermountain wheelsets are a nice drop-in substitute for Mantua wheelsets.

I carved off the cast on railings and roof walks:

Wire railings replace the cast-on ones and there are mounting boards for the roof walk:

A coat of primer helps paint stick to the metal parts and makes the final colors more uniform:

The caboose is painted red, except for black hardware and a Grimy Black roof. The roof walks are not yet installed so the roof is easier to paint, but they are painted. The wheel faces are painted black to simulate the tarry, dirty color of wheels with journal bearings.

I glued clear plastic inside the windows to glaze them:

The roof walk is glued on and the caboose is assembled:

I have yet to settle on a road name, but when I do, the caboose will be lettered and numbered with dry transfers.
