Hey Guys:
Just out of curiosity, does anyone on the forum have any Brass locomotives and if so, what make and model? Whats your experience in collecting them been like?

I have one, an HOn3 PFM/United 2-6-0 C&S Mogul from the 70s. I have no desire to get more, many of today's models come pretty near to matching what could only be done in brass years ago. It is nice to own at least one though.[;)]

I don't have any brass locos, but I do have one piece of item made of brass *g*
I bought an overland Tri-level enclosed autorack, undecorated, and then painted it for Chessie System. Outside AND inside... boy the masking was a pain!
Like Shaygetz said, the newer plastic stuff has much the same fidelity such that brass is almost not worth anything more than "look what I spent" bragging rights. Which is just silly. Now in the case of the autrack though, I wanted true stainless-steel see-thru panels; can't get that in plastic and the Plano kits are boku bucks anyway, on top of all the work to modify the Walthers base - it was arguably break-even for what I paid.
Now, were I to take a straw poll at the next monthly club meeting, I bet I'd have access to at LEAST a full hundred brass locos. Most that I have seen are unpainted display pieces, and I hear the older runs run like crap. People seem to treat them more as investments but you really have to know what you're dealing with for that to work. Most runs are extremely limited but the amazing thing to me is that it seems EVERYTHING - no matter how strange or obscure - has been done in brass!
I still wouldn't mind having just one real nice "signature favorite" loco though. It IS nice to admire the craftsmanship in brass!

Hey Gic:
Yeah I basically agree:
I want in:
A) Electric/Traction: a Milwaukee EP-2 BiPolar (No plastic made)
B) Diesel: C-630 High-Nose N&W (Guess a Stewart would be ok, but not quite the same
C) Steam: 4-4-4-4 Duplex T-1: Might sub a Penn-Line
I tend to like obscure stuff so Brass helps there....
Was thinking of pursuing this?

I always thought of brass diesels as a non-event...even as a kid. How much effort and money put out for a nekkid shell and some handrailings I thought to myself...[:D]
Now an HO 4-8-8-8-4 Overland Erie Triplex...that be real brass[;)]
