Nice photo essay, WKS. Makes me want to pack my bags and move back to NH. It is so pretty and the air is so clean out there. Winter's cold as billy hell, but then when spring comes it's like being born all over again.
Anyways, I was studying photos of GG1's and noticing that some have what I assume to be air intakes high on the nose and some some below the downward cant of the body. Why? I gather that there was a big fiasco late in the 50's when a bunch of G's were sucking in a fine particulate of snow causing the motors to short, is that why?
Any Gperts out there?

Yes, I have that article somewhere , when this particular snow storm hit, the snow was fine, and electro-statically charged, and it got sucked into the air intakes because it literally HUNG above the tracks enough to reach the lower intakes. Shorted out all the GG1-s in service, they had to shut them down and use steam or diesel power. Next day, it was fine. No issues. But they moved the grille openings up higher so that wouldn't happen ever again.

That is correct. You can see them on the far end of the locomotive below the drop-off, whereas the others are above that on the narrow part of the cowling.
