Undocumented Tyco New Haven Diesel?
Tuesday, September 19, 2017
I purchased the New Haven Diesel off eBay and am wondering if this is an undocumented item or if it could be another brand? Seller claims it is Tyco, but I cannot find this in any Tyco catalog or online reference site. Note the road # on the boxed engine is to the front of the ladder but the road # on the unboxed engine is to the rear of the ladder. All references that I've been able to locate show the road # to the rear of the ladder.
Any insight would be appreciated.

Nope, definitely Tyco/Mantua. This is the first generation I believe with the screws holding the trucks in place. the boxed is a "second generation" if you will with the tabs. A quick check online shows the Gen 1's did have the number behind the ladder.
Awesome piece.

Tyco catalogs can be wrong. And everything isn't listed. Some items are listed and not sold in that year. Sometimes items shown in catalog photos are completely wrong for that year. I would look in catalogs for when that type of snap in rear drive was used. The aluminum tab seen in the black painted area dates the piece. frank

Everything on it looks correct for a Tyco engine. I agree with Dan, one is likely just an earlier production. I have several Tyco duplicates with variations between them.
Nice engines BTW!

Many thanks to everyone who responded. I've learned a lot from this forum and am looking to learn more about my legacy HO trains including Gilbert.
I looked at the underside of both engines and see that the trucks are screwed in. The front, unpowered truck, has a L shaped bracket that is screwed into a post. The rear truck has a spring around the screw that is also screwed into a post. Just for documentation purposes, I've enclosed two more pictures of the underside of the rear trucks for both engines.
The first picture is the engine with the road # to the front of the ladder. This engine is sealed on the pack, so the picture is not as clear as I would like.

The second picture is the engine with the road # to the rear of the ladder.
