The rail joiners on this bit of sectional track must weigh 300 pounds.

Picked up a ride on this UP business train out to see the new Santa Teresa, NM
rail yards. Mostly double tracked now, to LA, this yard allows transcon trains
to pull in, get gassed up, sanded up, lubed up, commode serviced, crew changed, and
be on its way with 1.5 hours. Makes delivery times for containerized cargo on par, or
better, with more expensive trucks. Couple of stats thrown at us is that the yard
accommodate something on the order of 500,000 containers annually and the tracks
handle 90 trains daily. To the North, the BNSF has a busy amount of traffic, in addition.
The bridge dates to 1910, previously it was a wooden trestle dating from the railroad's
initial entry into El Paso, when it was the Southern Pacific, in 1881.
