Hornby High Wheeler set. The early British railroaders had a thing for these
paddle wheel like driving wheels on their express locomotives. This model
performs beautifully, although it barely has enough traction to pull its three
car set, which in turn is surprisingly light. The prototype is circa 1870, about
the same time that American Types in the US commanded the rails. One would
subsume that the Brits were a little more confident about their trackways being
able to handle higher speed, at that era.

Nice, Mike!

And it is loco drive. I believe a tender drive would have been
a little better. The engineer(s) who crafted this thing must have
really thought long and hard about keeping the coaches very,
very light, but it does function well, otherwise. I doubt it could
pull more than 4 or 5 wagons.

I had a feeling it was loco drive, based on your description of its performance. For all that people talk about loco drive as if it's always superior.. it's not the best thing for singles, especially when the drive wheels are the only ones powered (as is plainly the case with that one). I recommend seeing if you can get hold of a Hornby tender drive to retrofit it with.
