So while staring at my Atlas/Kato RS-1, wondering how I'd fix it. Then I realized the following. Why fiddle with a complicated DCC board I don't need? The internals of my DC Bachmann B30-7 are fairly simple, how hard would it be to remove the DCC board and rewire the internals to operate as a DC locomotive would?

Also since they cut track maintaince the trains had huge trouble making over the railroad by the end

It's not hard to do. Orange and Gray are power to the motor from the DCC board. Take the red and black wires coming off the trucks, and solder those to the motor, remove the orange and gray. Lighting is Blue is common, yellow is front, white is rear? Anyway, solder the blue wire to the black on the motor, and the yellow / white to red power. If you had directional lighting before, you will lose it, or you can wire in some diodes to switch the current between Front and Rear lighting. Not that hard to undo.

So if I'm understanding correctly, I desolder the blue and orange wires going to the DCC board, and solder the wires from either the front or back truck (whichever one provides power I assume) onto the two contacts the DCC wires used to connect to?

Gray and Orange, not Blue, that's ground. But basically, yes. Truck wires go directly to the motor, any wires off the decoder to the motor get removed, regardless of color. that simple. Now, you need to make SURE you get the truck wiring correct, or when you place it on the track, it could go in reverse when you apply forward throttle. Normally, engine facing right, plus wire ( red ) should be on the closest rail, black wire (ground ) should go to farthest rail. You will want to apply + and - power to the motor to make sure which direction it goes, then wire accordingly.

If you are interested, I have non DCC boards taken from my atlas locos that I converted to dcc. Might be an easier option for you. Also if you are interested in selling your DCC board, let me know.

If you are not having fun, you are not doing it right.
