Hi All

I just picked up one of my favorite ( and first ) Burlington Route cabooses from Mantua today for $1. Did you know that at least some of the Mantua cabooses have the Mantua name molded into the inside of shell and the numbers 2227? I didn't. I found the same numbers in some of my Tyco cabooses without the Mantua name. The shell of my BR caboose is marked but the under frame is not. The under frame looks like a Mantua with the metal parts on the trucks. Here are a couple of pictures I took. Can anyone tell if it is a Mantua underframe?

If it's a metal chassis / underframe, it's most likely Mantua (/Tyco). Same goes for metal trucks. Yours appear to be riveted in place so that's even more likely to be Mantua.

Nice paint job on that one. If I'm not mistaken, the Burlington is also the real inspiration for that particular streamlined caboose design.

The inspiration for the Mantua-TYCO streamline caboose is a good question.

I think the Burlington-CB&Q model that GIC mentions is actually perhaps what Bachmann might have been trying for with this model...

The Mantua-TYCO streamline cupola does look a bit like the Wabash caboose...

But the side end area seems more Pennsy to me...

Anybody have a pic of a caboose that resembles the TYCO model???

Note that I did say, "_IF_ I'm not mistaken..." [B)]

Actually, about 10 minutes after I posted that I remembered the Bachmann / CB&Q connection and worried I might have been confused...

Great photos! That BN caboose is about as close to a real 1:1 scale TOY as I have ever seen!

Hi All,

Thanks for the input. I have to be honest, I'm not a real big fan of the UP, BN style of cabooses in the pictures. I know it's strange seeing as how they are very similar to my beloved Tyco cabooses. I have a couple of Bachmann cabooses like that and just can't bring myself to put them on my layout. But I can't get rid of them because they are part of complete boxed sets LOL!

I understood the Mantua/Tyco streamlined cupola caboose to be based on Pennsylvania railroad design. The end platforms are uniquely PRR.
