finally, after wanting to do this for 2 years, i am finally expanding the layout. Here is the plan so far:
Recently expanded my layout to 6 by 9. Double Main with 24' radius turns on the outer main. 22' radius in the inner main. Mini Yard with storage space Based on early 50's Southern California 50's era buildings and vehicles but common enough that the town would allow for newer running equipment. Home roads will be the Southern Pacific and ATSF with occasional runs by the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific and Pennsy. (Sorry but I love those roads even if they aren't Western roads) Layout will be entirely DCC. Working on a wiring diagram. Era will be the 40's thru modern times. I will switch off as I see fit. Here are some pics of the progress so far.

Lighting is also being upgraded.
My progress will be slow as it has been and will continue to be busy out here. But I will get there.

| What a terrific size to work with Ray. Looks like you've got some nice buildings and equipment to start with. Keep the photos coming.

I agree he has a lot of room to work with. Also great choices in locomotives love that CNW...and is that a SP-SF SD unit sitting under that shed? That's one of my favorite schemes of all time! Keep us updated!

Thanks everyone. Progress has been extremely slow, partly becuase if everything I have going on. I am reusing track from the other layout and some of it still has scenic material on it. Currently cleaning those pieces up a bit. The yard is coming along and is fast becoming my favorite part of the layout.

Very nice, Ray. That's pretty bold to work with a six foot width. Are you able to reach, OK? Also, how is that cork road bed holding down on that Styrofoam, for you? I always had trouble doing that. Last, I like the visual effect of that curve of track disappearing behind the engine house. Adds depth.

The reach has become an issue especially since I am limited in space around the layout. Im at a point where I am not working on it till spring so I may consoder an acces panel or something.

My first layout was 11x5½. It was just barely workable to me as a board, but once I began laying out streets and other stuff for a town that was going to be in the center of the board, I knew I had screwed up. I could reach the areas but not well enough to work well on. Got to be very tiresome after a short while. The layout was dismantled when we moved to TX, so its a moot point now - but if I had stuck with it I definitely would have had to do an access hatch.

After various experiences, anything greater than 2 1/2 to reach becomes a severe hindrance. I cannot imagine that trying to access the center track, here, was viable. The hatches, cut into the present El Paso Model Train Club layout are extremely hard to access, to the point of being nearly impossible, and as we age, bending and ducking and crawling becomes ever more problematic.
I should hasten to add, that I love what you're doing there Ray, and given that you seem to building up a cityscape in the center section, I am sure that will be just fine.

Here are a few updated pics. Im laying out buildings, so I know where my roads will go.
Think I have it all figured out...for now.
