Hello All, I have a couple of Varney plastic box cars. Is anyone here familiar with these? It seems like they are taller than the usual 40-footers, and even the ladders don't go all the way to the roof. Is there any prototype for these? Are they too tall? Thanks, Chris

Taller, shorter, longer really doesn't matter for they are prototypically correct. The taller and longer ones are newer. Seeing freight trains made up of these different size box cars was common from the 1920's to the 1960's.
* As to roof walks as time went on most needs for roof walks no longer existed and ere removed. Once this happened the need for ladders that reached the roof also became not needed. On certain car such as hoppers for certain commodities getting access to the roof to load or unload these car remains necessary so roof walks remain on these cars.

Thanks for the reply. I'm aware of different heights existing, but I have the feeling the Varney car was supposed to be a generic 40-footer of the day (mid-late 50's). The fact that the ladder ends at a "normal" height and ends about a foot lower than the roof line and roof walk, seems to me that the roof is too tall. Looking at the Varney, they use a very thick profile for the roof. Heaven help the man who tries to climb that ladder and make the stretch to the roof!

The Varney plastic boxcar appears to represent a boxcar that was rebuilt to be taller.
