What's safe on trains oil wise? Wahl Clipper Oil or Rem Oil aka gun oil? Read both are safe. Got both at Wal Mart for $7.11. Not willing to spend 10+ on LaBelle and fight horrible traffic for it!

I usually use some fishing reel oil I picked up long ago for motor bearings, side rods and metal axles in metal tender trucks. Sometimes, I use automatic transmission fluid in the trucks. For gears and driver axles, I like LaBelle 106 gear grease. It's a white PTFE (as in Teflon) grease. It's safe for plastics and is sticky enough that the gears don't fling it much. I know you're looking for something more available than the brand name LaBelle stuff, but maybe there's a white PTFE grease for automotive use that's also plastic safe.

I'd be leery of light oil on the gears, thinking it might go flying off onto wheels, rails, etc., but if anyone on this forum has actual experience, it would be interesting to hear it.

I use Vaseline--yes, THAT Vaseline--on my gears. Never an issue and easy to find.

Hah! Another Man of the Wahl. I use it for wheel and track cleaning. Great stuff. $3 buys a lifetime supply.
I will try the Vasoline on gears. Sounds right.
