I am trying to find the meaning of the white posts that one would see along the way of railway road beds...These were concrete pillars, usually 5-6 feet high, 8-10 inches wide, always painted white with black horizontal (bars) or stripe(s) on them...I am sure the stripes indicated something related to the road...ANYBODY know ?? Thanks

Sounds like a whistle post, seems like every American railroad had their own idea of what they should look like.

Kinda figured that as they were placed just prior to crossings here on the coast in Eastern N.Carolina....They were everywhere at one time but as the tracks were taken up I guess everthing else went too...Would have looked nice as a driveway marker...Thanks !
