Took my alternate route home Friday night, and hit up my favorite thrift store for diecast cars. Went in, walked the aisle fast as is my wont, found some cars, then did a slow-walk back down the aisle to see if I missed anything. Nope, nothing else on the hooks. Turning to go, I noticed a clear plastic bed comforter bag on the floor...I see a piece of HO track...then another. Hmm. Walked right by it a few minutes ago. Walked up to it, and started drooling. Athearn blue boxes, Silverstreak box, Atlas box, Revell box, misc. train cars, a small diesel. Grabbed the bag up, and off I went. Priced at $15 for all, what a deal. Got it out the store FAST. I was going to take it over to a buddy's house and have a guys night sort-out, but decided it was too late by then.
Anyway, took the bag to work today, and sorted it all out on my shipping dock there. Loads of old stuff. There are two Mantua brass cabooses , one a bobber kit, the other a regular caboose kit, with cast frame and brass sides/top. The bobber is missing the axles and side frames, the other longer caboose is missing the roof. Also had a Mantua 0-4-0 all-metal engine and tender. I'd say I got my $15 worth with those 3 ! I've never seen the mantua bobber in brass before.
Got the trains and misc. stuff sorted into Dell boxes, and plan on working on the 0-4-0 at my train shop tomorrow, to see if it will run. There's a few kit cars in there I will probably sell off, the MKT wood and metal cars I have no real interest in. Most are needing some parts and work.
Anyway, a few pictures....

Jerry

Good eye for the gold.
I see those type of bags at thrift shops all the time, and
give them the once over.
Usually, they're filled with the Construx- type building parts nobody wants.
One day, maybe.

The box is complete...but no buildings. <edit> I take it back, the smallest shed is there, it's the small white building in the back left of the photo <end edit> It's full of black railroad trestle parts. I have the instructions as well for the buildings.

I think it was a few years ago, I found another bag like it in this same thrift store - but it had G scale in it, a Bachmann Big Hauler, a Bachmann passenger car, and an LGB passenger car. The LGB is/was worth around $70 by itself. I paid $15 for that lot as well. I fixed the Big Hauler, the power contacts in the engine were all bent up, and had to glue one in place and had to do a total disassembly to get them right, but it ran great after that. Trains at most thrift stores are rare. But I got a great deal on the HO for sure!
