HOLY FAILING VOCABULARY BATMAN!!!

I wanted one of these from the day 6 years ago when I saw it on Tony Cook's site. But I wasn't prepared for how superlatively GORGEOUS it would be in person!

Even little 30-month-old Bethany, upon stumbling into the room where I left it under the photo tent, spurted on her own: "oooh iss-soo prettty!"

Words can't describe.... It's absolutely stunning! One of Tyco's hands-down, all-in cash-out BEST paint jobs EVER. And did you know, it actually has METALLIC FLAKE paint? It's hard to photograph but the light green has a satiny metal sheen that just "pops", and it sparkles when you hold it under light!

This has leapfrogged into my favorite spot of all the pieces in my collection (and I daresay with modesty that I have a few good ones). It even ranks among my entire train (not just Tyco) collection, period. Well worth the hunt, and the fact that I got it for an impossibly lucky song (I've spent more on others that are far more common) is just - sweet, sweet icing. [:D]

Wow. Ya'll're gonna have to start calling me "gollum" because this is my "precious" and I can't stop gazing at it...

Well can't say I'm wild about the paint scheme but then I have a Tyco RI Shark. The only PT powered Tyco I own and I like it for some weird reason! Must be a bi-product of being hit by 3 or 4 cars and more than a dozen motor-cycle accident induced concussions...!!!

Taste is a wonderfully subjective thing.

It's just cool you found something that makes you feel "Over the moon" as my ex would say.

Congradulations.

Actually, as a matter of fact it can't be proven but I'd swear by looks that it hasn't been run. There's nary any wear or scratches on the brass wheels, the plastic ones have perfect traction tires and the motor has a faint plasticky smell. It's cherry all around. The only thing missing is the box (strangely it came with foam), but there are probably boxes with ones that look worse, so... I am NOT going to fret about a stinking box!

Shewt, I'll be beyond the moon and passing Voyager I at this rate... [:P] and all that after being hit by a car, getting "killed" (cheated death by two inches) and, yes, (I am not making this up) being "dropped" on my head as a kid.

Thanks for indulging my fanboyism. "The Main Street of the Northwest"... what a romantic slogan.

It's not prototype...Northern Pacific never owned them...you'll have to get rid of it. OUCH! Guess I've been reading the Atlas Forum too much lately. [:O)]

Seriously, the TYCO NP Shark is a great looking loco! Such a shame that this run of oddballs from 1982 (GM&O GP20; NH GG1; and others) were not the kick off of a large and continuing set of releases for TYCO...they are really among some of TYCO's best and more complex paint jobs and done at a time when they were in fact leaning away from better products like these.

Glad you got one!

Nice Shark! Nose to tail... what's it gonna pull?

I got one of 'em AHM sharks, but it is painted in brilliant yellow & green CN with tubular numbers and white traced letters. Just a dummy (but lookin' for a power chassi)...

it's those noses... just plain sharp!

Imagine seeing a heritage AC4400 in Northern Pacific garb!

oh... my mind jumped ahead.

Thanks for the post. Congrats on this treasure find.

Tony L,

Congrats on acquiring a fine looking specimen! By my calculation you now have a full set of sharks. Does this mean we can expect one of your commentaries on the subject in the Corner?

Actually, I don;t quite have them all. Close, and with most most of the scarce ones, but there's still a few out there:

-Santa Fe
-Canadiana
-A-Team
-Johnson Wax

The A-Team is easy enough but I just haven't been drawn to it yet. Likewise, the Johnson Wax turns up but can never tell what that will go for. And I'd probably need two of them so I could turn one into the Santa Fe which is rare enough. I don't ever expect to find a Canadiana though.

It's been a good week.. I finally got a Rio Grande SD; that leaves only the Burlington to go, although I do have the Atlas version. That will be the first set of locos I complete.

I passed up a mint chrome Milwaukee E7 to get those two, but it was worth it.

I have promised to curtail my spending after these though, and the more I think about the looming changes with Number Two on the way... the more I should have done that yesterday...

Hey GIC:

When you say you have the Atlas version of the SD-24 do mean the ones passed off as Tyco's or an Atlas own branded unit?

Cheers,
G.

Yep... it's quite a surprise and it's taking me a long time to warm to the notion... but I'm sure by mid-December (due date) I'll be OK with the idea and ready to welcome the new little one... even though I have no idea what we're going to DO about it though. Big changes required, not for the best... it's all so very overwhelming right now. My collection may in fact have to go for sale at some point. Just have to ride it out and see what happens...

Gareth,

It's an original Atlas/Roco unit, the very same one pictured in the "Atlas Vs Tyco" comparison. I SUPPOSE I could pass it off... but then having Tyco's own in same paint would be a no-brainer, eh?

BTW That's an awesome pic of the D&H! Almost looks like an obelisk or tombstone... even sharky.... very imposing.

Hey GIC:

Could not your obvious expertise at things like the "Tide" car/decals be converted to income as opposed to selling your collection? I know I've been doing the time honoured tradition of weekend Pizza delivery for extra cash but I'm looking at my skill set to find a way to replace that income.

I may return to doing some computer servce work as well as some winter Horse-Logging to supplement my retirement savings efforts. It's not just the money involved it's all the effort as well, of finding all those pieces. After all you can't go into a Hellmart and replace your collection when your kids are grown.

On the other hand as Jackie Kennedy sid: "If you blow the raising of your kids, nothiung else you ever do in life will matter!"

Thanks for the compliment. I've certainly augmented me personal spending money with my talents, but by no means have they developed into "day job" (or even weekend job) status. Apparently there wasn't as much demand for a Tide or Oreo car as I might have hoped [B)]

They say necessity is the mother of invention, and you do what you gotta do, so who knows what will happen. I do know that my wife's heart is on quitting her job. And I would support that, but I don't make near enough income myself to make two kids AND our goal of a house... plus the impending necessary replacement of one (or both) cars in any way realistic or feasible. Even if I DID sell "everything". Not without sacrifice. So something will have to give.

I don't want to come across as playing the Fiddle of Woe, but... yeah. It's enough to temper my enthusiasm for sure. It hasn't helped that my lovely wife cruised through Bethany's pregnancy like a storybook queen, but this one has been downright murder on her (and me by extension) - and it's only 8 weeks in.

"It's a long way to Tipperary...." [8)]

Hey Tony:

I think a spouse being home with a child especially in the formative years is the building block of our culture both American and Canadian. There are a lot of forces at work trying to impeded that. The tax code needs to reflect that priority.

I was thinking on a smaller scale in regards your decal work. Could you not create "repair" decals for a variety of rolling stock and locomotives. It would leverage your skill base better than the extremly painstaking act of creating a "Tide" car!?

I had been thinking of perhaps you could compile your Epistle's in your GIC corner into an online book and sell downloads or mailed cd versions however, I just don't think the paying potential client base is big enough.

The decal thing maybe. Also I'm thiinking of a replacement value for your Train collection.

Maybe where you live you could also try what I'm going to do this year. I'm going to participate in a few weekends of blood-level studies in Montreal by a large canadian pharmacology company. They have a internal motel, cinema, gym etc and you stay the weekend a ew times. Payment 3-5000.00! I'm going tomove from a `94 Subaru wagon up to a `98 this fall and the bllod work along with selling my 94 will get me there with some left over.

Just some thoughts. Don't know if there are any pharma companies in Kentucky? You're alway welcome to come to Montreal (by train of course!) and bring some train stuff and we can yap trains a couple of weekends. Maybe we can get Todd (NYC), to join us!? He's nearby.[:D] [:D] [:D] [:D]

Just thinking outside the box...

Gareth,

Appreciate the thoughts and sentiments. I'm with you on the stay-at-home-parent thing, but it's a tough call. Far more than taxes do one's own personal choices weigh in for responsibility. I haven't done everything right, but I haven't made too many mistakes either. Unfortunately, I'm guilty of a case of eternal terminal wanderlust, consumerism and an inability to prioritize. Instead of a mortgage toward an asset, I have a bunch of silly... crap. stuff. Nothing, really. No one to blame but myself for that one but then I honestly look back at where I came from - the situations - and can say that I might not have done otherwise, and haven't done too bad. At least I/we don't have much debt. But not a lot of savings either. But then that's all making excuses that lead right back to square one. Goingincirclez, indeed.

The University of Kentucky has done a few medical studies, but the reimbursements are pitiful. Remember, the is the US of A medical system - the eny of the world of graft, greed and corruption. Having worked closely with the billing and reimbursement end for the past 7 years, I can honestly say that as bad as people will admit that it is - they aren't even close, and have no idea. It's a house of cards built on nothing but greed and lies. And really, there are so many tentacles in the pot it's almost impossible to fix. Think the movie "Fight Club" where they attempt to reset the debt record to zero - that's about what it would take. Notgonnahappen.com

I do enjoy designing decals and am getting better/quicker at it. If I could peg a demand for them I'd do it. But I'm not the only one with Corel Draw and an Alps printer... [?]

Tony

Congratulations on the up and coming. Three years ago I was feeling much like you probably are. We had a 9 and 7 yr old and I thought we we long done with diapers. Surprise I have a three year old that has just been a joy. I don't even remember what life was like before that.

Don't sell you trains! Hell I still regret selling some things that I had in hand but at the time didn't play into my whole "slice of Woodbury" concept (e.g Bubble Yum Trailers...Aaaugh) It took me about 12 years from my first ebay purchase to finally getting my idea on the wall. I took years at a time off from collecting to deal with kids, work blah blah..

I still want a Tide and Oreo. Look at the Slice of Woodbury photos and you can see the gaping space left on the CF/Cvd Hopper shelf. It is much too horribly short. Maybe you could work on the Arm and Hammer covered hopper too. Seems like it would be easy enough to replicate that logo. I just need to wait til my annual bonus comes through at the end of summer and I will be a callin'..

I am also looking into a place (local club with a major seasonal display) that I took some classes about 12 years ago. They had a homemade device which took an air compressor and used baking soda to "sandblast" the paint right off of plastic HO bodies so they could paint in their own fictional rail schemes. It was pretty cool, and didn't harm the plastic at all. If I could provide you with blank canvasas as it were, the job would be less time consuming for you, and still profitable.

Anyway, thanks for all your help and remember...what doesn't kill us should serve to make us stronger.
