This weeks entry is a Mantua Shifter that I won on eBay this week. Getting it in pieces and will be needing some work, but that's the fun of the hobby. This one even has the valve gear setup.

Will keep ya'll posted when I get it started and then finished. Gonna be a complete restoration job.

It's like a 3-D puzzle, only more satisfying when you finish it, because hopefully it RUNS then. LOL.

Nice find, one of mine has the valve gear...I just learned recently that there are at least two variations---note the deep flanges on the one on the right as well...

The total cost was $31, including shipping. It didn't have the frame, but that I already have laying around. I just love buying those lots they list on evil bay. One batch yielded a Mantua 2-8-2, a Mantua 4-6-2, a Manuta General, A Mantua Switcher and an American Flyer 0-6-0. All of them were restorable and run real nice. Like I said, the fun of the hobby.

Thanks for the info, Ken...I looked it up and could not find anything conclusive. It runs well for being 64 years old...

I did notice that the cab is a bit taller than the other version as well. The one on the left came with the simple valve gear, I picked up a loco with the complete set and transferred it to this one. The one on the right has a solid metal boiler and no provision for a working light and no traction tires either. Its cab mounts to the boiler with a screw, where the other is the more typical slip on fit...

I also have 2 mantua 0-4-0. I got one with valve gear for $26, and the plastic shell type one for $16 I completely repainted them so they look great!

Ok. Finally got the loco stripped and done. Found out that the cab and tender body both had Stage 4 terminal Zinc Rot(he's backk). Found a replacement for both and got her finished.

It turned out nice and is a very quiet running little loco for an open frame motor.
